Malta Road Accidents: Two Women and Girl, 5, Injured in Separate Incidents
Two Women and Girl, 5, Injured in Separate Traffic Accidents: A Call for Road Safety Awareness
It was a chilling start to the day for residents of Msida and Birkirkara as two separate traffic accidents left three women and a five-year-old girl injured. The incidents, which occurred within hours of each other, have once again brought the issue of road safety to the forefront in Malta.
Msida Accident: Woman Seriously Injured
The first accident occurred around 7:30 AM on Monday, near the Msida Marina. A 35-year-old woman was crossing the road at the pedestrian crossing when she was struck by a car. The woman, a local resident, sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital. The driver, a 42-year-old man from Msida, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with the woman lying injured on the road as traffic came to a standstill. “It was a horrible sight,” said one witness who wished to remain anonymous. “I hope the woman makes a full recovery.”
Birkirkara Accident: Girl, 5, and Woman Injured
Just hours later, another accident occurred in Birkirkara. A five-year-old girl and her mother were crossing the road at the pedestrian crossing near St. Helen’s School when they were struck by a car. The girl sustained minor injuries, while her mother, a 32-year-old woman, was seriously injured and taken to Mater Dei Hospital.
The driver, a 55-year-old man from Birkirkara, was arrested on suspicion of reckless driving. Neighbors expressed their concern about the safety of the pedestrian crossing, with one resident saying, “We’ve been calling for improvements to this crossing for years. It’s only a matter of time before something like this happens again.”
Road Safety in Malta: A Growing Concern
These accidents have once again highlighted the pressing issue of road safety in Malta. According to the Malta Police, there have been over 200 road accidents so far this year, with many involving pedestrians. The high number of accidents has led to calls for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and improved road safety education.
Dr. Maria Attard, a road safety expert, commented, “We need to address the culture of reckless driving in Malta. Stricter penalties and better education can help, but we also need to improve our infrastructure to make our roads safer.”
What Can We Do?
In the wake of these accidents, many are asking what can be done to improve road safety. Here are a few suggestions:
- Always use pedestrian crossings and follow traffic rules.
- Drivers, be aware of pedestrians, especially in school zones and near busy pedestrian areas like the Msida Marina and St. Helen’s School in Birkirkara.
- Support calls for improved road safety infrastructure and stricter enforcement of traffic laws.
Let’s make our roads safer, one responsible action at a time.
