PAM Set to Contest All Districts in Malta’s 2023 Local Elections
Partit Aħwa Maltin: From Niche to Nationwide in 2023 Elections
Imagine standing at the bustling Republic Street in Valletta, the capital’s main thoroughfare, and witnessing a sea of green and white. This isn’t a national holiday, but a testament to Partit Aħwa Maltin’s (PAM) growing presence. The party, once a niche player, is set to contest all 13 districts in Malta’s upcoming local council elections on May 30.
From Humble Beginnings to Island-Wide Ambitions
Founded in 2016, PAM started as a grassroots initiative, focusing on environmental issues and community engagement. Their first foray into local politics was in 2019, contesting only three districts. Fast forward to 2023, PAM is ready to contest every single district, from the historic streets of Rabat to the modern hub of Birkirkara.
“We’ve seen a surge in support,” says Dr. Arnold Cassola, PAM’s chairperson. “People are tired of the status quo. They want change, and they’re looking for alternatives.”
Policy Platform: People and Planet at the Core
PAM’s manifesto is a breath of fresh air, focusing on people-centric policies and environmental sustainability. They promise to tackle issues like affordable housing, public transport, and waste management. Their plans include creating more green spaces, promoting cycling, and improving recycling rates.
Take their housing policy, for instance. PAM proposes to build affordable homes, not just apartments, but actual houses with gardens. They plan to do this by repurposing derelict buildings and encouraging community cooperation.
Challenges and Opportunities: The Road Ahead
Contesting all districts is no easy feat. PAM faces challenges like limited resources and name recognition. Established parties have deep pockets and extensive networks. Yet, PAM sees this as an opportunity to engage with more people, to listen and learn.
“We’re not afraid of challenges,” says Cassola. “We believe in our message, and we believe in the power of people. We’re ready to roll up our sleeves and work hard.”
PAM’s candidates are a mix of seasoned activists and first-timers, all united by a common vision. They’re knocking on doors, attending community events, and using social media to connect with voters. Their message is simple: PAM is here to listen, to represent, and to deliver.
As the campaign heats up, PAM’s green and white flags are popping up everywhere. From the coastal town of Marsaxlokk to the urban heart of Msida, PAM’s presence is growing. And on May 30, Malta will vote. Will PAM’s star rise? Only the ballot boxes will tell.
