Żaren Fights to Save Żejtun’s Tal-Ajkla from Development

From Tal-Aħkar to Żejtun: Żaren’s Unyielding Spirit in the Face of Adversity

In the heart of Żejtun, a town known for its rich history and resilient spirit, a group of locals is rallying together under the banner of ‘Ma tagħmlu xejn ma’ Tal-Ajkla’ (We won’t do anything with Tal-Ajkla). They are Żaren, a community initiative fighting to preserve their heritage and protect their environment, and their latest campaign is stirring up a storm.

Tal-Ajkla, a vast tract of agricultural land in Żejtun, has been earmarked for a massive development project. The proposed scheme, a mix of residential and commercial buildings, has sparked outrage among Żejtun’s residents. They fear it will destroy the town’s rural charm, threaten local agriculture, and exacerbate traffic congestion.

Roots Deep in Żejtun’s Soil

Żaren’s journey began in 2018 when a group of concerned Żejtun residents came together to protect Tal-Aħkar, another plot of agricultural land under threat. Their successful campaign inspired them to continue fighting for Żejtun’s heritage and environment. Today, Żaren is a registered NGO with a growing membership, determined to safeguard Żejtun’s rural identity.

“Żejtun is more than just a town. It’s a way of life,” says Maria, a Żaren member and Żejtun native. “Our fields, our traditional houses, our festivals – they’re all part of who we are. We can’t let that slip away.”

Ma Tagħmlu Xejn Ma’ Tal-Ajkla: A New Chapter

Żaren’s latest campaign, ‘Ma tagħmlu xejn ma’ Tal-Ajkla’, is their most ambitious yet. Launched with a vibrant protest march along Żejtun’s bustling Triq l-Indipendenza, the campaign is calling on the government to scrap the Tal-Ajkla development project and instead invest in sustainable, community-led initiatives.

“We’re not against development,” explains Mario, Żaren’s chairperson. “But we want development that respects Żejtun’s character, that involves us, and that benefits us. Tal-Ajkla is our chance to set a precedent, to show that Malta can do better.”

Żaren’s plans for Tal-Ajkla include a community farm, a rural education centre, and a network of walking trails connecting Żejtun’s historic sites. They’ve even proposed a ‘Green Corridor’ linking Żejtun to nearby Marsaxlokk, creating a unique, car-free route for cyclists and pedestrians.

Fighting for Żejtun, Fighting for Malta

Żaren’s battle is not just about Żejtun. It’s about the future of Malta’s rural areas, about the balance between development and heritage, and about the power of community action. Their campaign has resonated far beyond Żejtun, inspiring similar initiatives in other towns and villages.

“If we lose Tal-Ajkla, we lose a piece of Żejtun’s soul,” says Maria. “But if we win, we send a message to the whole of Malta: that our heritage matters, that our environment matters, and that we won’t stand by and let it be destroyed.”

Żaren’s fight is far from over. But with each protest, each meeting, each social media post, they’re proving that when it comes to protecting what they love, Żejtun’s spirit is unbreakable.
