At precisely 11:43 AM on Tuesday, the quiet residential street of Triq il-Kbira in Birkirkara was shattered by a deafening explosion. Neighbours watched in disbelief as a house went up in flames, sending plumes of smoke into the clear Maltese sky. The sudden inferno left residents stunned and authorities scrambling to contain the blaze and ensure no one was hurt.
Firefighters Battle the Blaze
The Malta Fire Authority (MFA) received numerous calls about the explosion and fire at 12, Triq il-Kbira. Within minutes, fire engines from nearby stations, including those from Birkirkara and Msida, rushed to the scene. Upon arrival, they found the house engulfed in flames, with debris scattered across the street.
Firefighters worked tirelessly to extinguish the blaze, using water jets and foam to combat the intense heat. The fire was brought under control after about an hour, but it took several more hours to completely douse the smoldering remains.
Residents Evacuated, No Injuries Reported
Residents in nearby houses were evacuated as a precaution due to the intensity of the fire and the risk of structural collapse. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, although the shock was evident on the faces of those who witnessed the explosion.
“I was in my kitchen when I heard this massive explosion,” said Maria, a 65-year-old resident who lives a few houses down. “I ran out to see what happened, and I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was like a scene from a movie.”
Investigation Underway: Cause of Explosion Unknown
The cause of the explosion is still under investigation. Police and MFA officials have cordoned off the area, and forensic experts are collecting evidence. Early reports suggest that a gas leak may have been the cause, but this has not been confirmed.
Superintendent of Police, Philip Vella, stated, “We are treating this as a serious incident. Our investigation is ongoing, and we are exploring all possibilities. We urge anyone who may have information or witnessed the incident to come forward.”
The owner of the house, a 55-year-old man, was not at home at the time of the explosion. He has been informed and is cooperating with the investigation.
