Cigarette Butt Sparks Major Fire in Swieqi

Watch: The Smoldering Aftermath of a Discarded Cigarette in Swieqi

It was a seemingly innocuous moment. A smoker, finished with their cigarette, flicked the butt into a public bin on Triq il-Kbira, Swieqi. Little did they know, this small act would spark a chain reaction that would leave the local council with a hefty bill and residents with a stark reminder of the dangers of littering.

From Spark to Inferno

CCTV footage, obtained by Hot Malta, captures the moment the discarded cigarette ignited a blaze that engulfed the bin and spread to nearby bushes. The fire, which broke out in the early hours of Sunday, quickly escalated, sending plumes of smoke into the air and causing panic among nearby residents.

“I woke up to the sound of sirens and saw smoke billowing from the direction of the bins,” said a shocked resident who wished to remain anonymous. “It was terrifying to think that something so small could cause so much damage.”

Cleanup and Costs

The Swieqi Local Council was swift in its response, dispatching a team to extinguish the fire and clear the debris. However, the damage was extensive. The bin was completely destroyed, and the surrounding area was left charred and scarred. The council estimates that the cleanup operation and replacement of the bin will cost thousands of euros.

“This is a stark reminder of the consequences of littering,” said a spokesperson for the Swieqi Local Council. “We urge smokers to dispose of their cigarettes responsibly. A moment of carelessness can lead to serious consequences.”

Preventing Future Fires

In the wake of the fire, the Swieqi Local Council is considering installing cigarette disposal units around the town. These units, which are designed to extinguish cigarettes and prevent them from being flicked into bins, have been successful in other localities around Malta.

“We’re looking into all options to prevent a recurrence of this incident,” said the council spokesperson. “We’re also appealing to smokers to use the ashtrays provided and to dispose of their cigarettes responsibly.”

Meanwhile, the resident who witnessed the fire has a stark warning for others. “Please, please, don’t flick your cigarettes into bins. It might seem like a small thing, but as we’ve seen, it can have big consequences.”
