Explosion, Fire Engulfs Birkirkara House

Smoke billowed into the Birkirkara sky yesterday afternoon, as a powerful explosion and subsequent fire engulfed a house in the quiet residential street of Triq il-Kuncizzjoni. Neighbours watched in shock as flames licked the walls of the terraced house, sending plumes of black smoke into the air.

Emergency Services Rush to the Scene

Within minutes, sirens wailed through the narrow streets as firefighters, police, and Civil Protection Department officials rushed to the scene. The blaze was brought under control after around two hours, but not before causing significant damage to the property.

The explosion was heard and felt across several neighbouring streets, with some residents reporting their windows shaking. “I was in my kitchen when I heard this loud bang,” said Maria, a resident of nearby Triq San Ġużepp. “I ran outside and saw the smoke. It was terrifying.”

No Injuries Reported

Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The house was unoccupied at the time of the incident, according to the owner, who declined to comment further. The family had moved out temporarily for renovations, a neighbour revealed.

Police and forensic experts are currently investigating the cause of the explosion. While too early to rule out any possibilities, early indications suggest it may have been caused by a gas leak. “We’re treating all possibilities,” said a police spokesperson, “but initial findings point towards a gas-related incident.”

Residents Left Shocked

Residents of Triq il-Kuncizzjoni and surrounding streets were left shaken by the incident. “This is a quiet street,” said another neighbour, Joseph. “We’ve never had anything like this happen before. It’s really scary.”

Councillor for Birkirkara, Alexia Debrincat, visited the scene and assured residents that the local council was working closely with the relevant authorities to ensure their safety. “Our priority is the safety and well-being of our residents,” she said.

As the smoke cleared and the sun set over Birkirkara, the charred remains of the house served as a stark reminder of the day’s events. The family is expected to return to their home in the coming days, but the memory of the explosion will linger for some time.
