Former Gżira Mayor Joins PN for Upcoming Elections
Gżira’s Political Waters Stir as Former Mayor Joins PN
Gżira’s bustling Republic Street, usually abuzz with chatter and the aroma of fresh pastizzi, has seen a shift in its political scene. Former Labour mayor, Chantelle Azzopardi, has announced she will be contesting the next local council elections – but this time, she’s running with the Nationalist Party (PN).
From Labour to Nationalist Ranks
Azopardi, who served as mayor from 2017 to 2019, has been a familiar face in Gżira’s political scene. Her decision to switch parties has the local political community, with many curious about what drove this change. Azopardi, a chartered accountant by profession, has been tight-lipped about her reasons, only stating, “I believe in the PN’s vision for Malta and Gżira’s future.”
This move is not rare in Malta’s political history, but it’s certainly a rarity. Party hopping, as it’s known locally, is often met with raised eyebrows and questions about political integrity. However, Azzopardi remains unfazed, focusing on her campaign and connecting with Gżira residents.
PN Welcomes Azzopardi with Open Arms
The PN has welcomed Azopardi with open arms, seeing her as a strong candidate who can bring fresh ideas to the table. PN leader Bernard Grech, during a recent visit to Gżira, praised Azzopardi’s local knowledge and commitment. “Chantelle knows Gżira inside out,” Grech said, “and her experience as mayor will be invaluable to our team.”
Grech’s visit to Gżira was not just a show of support for Azzopardi but also a sign of the PN’s renewed focus on local councils. The party has been investing time and resources in building strong local teams, hoping to challenge Labour’s dominance in upcoming elections.
Gżira Residents React
Reactions from Gżira residents have been mixed. Some have expressed surprise at Azzopardi’s party switch but remain open to her ideas. “I’ve always found Chantelle approachable and hardworking,” said one resident, “I’m willing to listen to what she has to say now.”
Others, however, have been more critical. “It’s a bit of a shock,” said another resident, “but I guess we’ll have to wait and see what she stands for now.” Labour supporters in Gżira have been equally vocal, with some questioning Azzopardi’s loyalty to the party she once led.
Despite the mixed reactions, Azzopardi remains undeterred. She’s been busy knocking on doors, listening to residents’ concerns, and outlining her vision for Gżira. “I’m here to serve the people of Gżira,” she said, “and I’m looking forward to working with the PN to make our town an even better place to live.”
As the election season heats up, Gżira residents can expect to see more of Azzopardi and her PN team. Whether she’ll succeed in winning over voters remains to be seen, but one thing is clear – Gżira’s political scene is far from quiet.
