Hoax Alert: No Hantavirus in Malta – Fact Check
As I strolled down Republic Street in Valletta, the heart of Malta, I noticed a friend frantically scrolling through her phone, her eyes widening. “Did you see this?” she asked, showing me a post claiming that hantavirus had been detected in Malta. I raised an eyebrow. I’d heard of the virus, but not in Malta. Let’s fact-check this.
The Viral Post
The post, circulating on social media, claimed that the Superintendence of Public Health had confirmed cases of hantavirus in Malta. It urged the public to be cautious, especially when handling rodents. The post was shared hundreds of times, sparking worry among locals and tourists alike.
What is Hantavirus?
Hantavirus is a family of viruses spread mainly by rodents, primarily through their urine, droppings, or saliva. It can cause Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), a severe respiratory disease, in humans. While it’s rare, it’s serious, with a mortality rate of around 38%. But has it reached Malta?
Fact-Checking the Claim
I reached out to the Superintendence of Public Health, our main health authority based in Msida. Dr. Charmaine Gauci, the Superintendent of Public Health, swiftly responded. “There are no confirmed cases of hantavirus in Malta,” she assured me. “The post is false.”
I also checked with the Ministry of Health, who echoed Dr. Gauci’s statement. They confirmed that no cases have been reported or detected in Malta. So, why the misinformation?
Upon investigation, it appears the post was a hoax, likely inspired by genuine hantavirus outbreaks elsewhere. The image used in the post was not even from Malta, but from a stock photo of a rat in a sewer. The post took advantage of people’s fears and the lack of specific knowledge about the virus.
Staying Safe from Rodents
While there’s no hantavirus in Malta, it’s always a good idea to stay safe from rodents. The Environmental Health Directorate advises:
- Seal holes and cracks in walls to prevent rodents from entering homes.
- Keep food in rodent-proof containers.
- Regularly clean and dispose of garbage properly.
- If you suspect a rodent infestation, contact a professional pest control service.
Remember, prevention is key. And always, always fact-check before sharing information.
As I walked back down Republic Street, I shared the facts with my friend. She sighed in relief, then laughed, “I should’ve known better than to believe everything I read online.” Let’s all strive to be more discerning, Malta.
