Malta’s Cultural Calendar: A Week of Vibrant Events (May 11-17, 2026)

As the Mediterranean sun begins to warm the cobbled streets of Valletta, so does the island’s cultural scene. This week, Malta and Gozo are buzzing with a vibrant mix of music, art, and heritage. Let’s dive in and see what’s on offer from May 11 to 17, 2026.

Music: From Classical to Rock

Kicking off the week is the Malta International Music Festival at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta. On May 11, enjoy a classical concert featuring the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and renowned soloists. The programme includes works by Mozart, Beethoven, and Chopin. Tickets are available online and at the door.

For something more contemporary, head to the Għajnsielem Rock Festival in Gozo on May 15. This annual event attracts both local and international rock bands, with this year’s lineup including Malta’s own The Rifffs and UK band The Darkness. Gates open at 6 PM, and tickets can be purchased online or at various outlets across the island.

Art: A Feast for the Eyes

Art enthusiasts should not miss the Biennalews: Malta Edition exhibition at the MUŻA in Valletta. Running until May 31, this international art exhibition features works by over 100 artists from around the world, selected through an open call. The exhibition explores the theme of ‘Borders,’ reflecting on the physical, social, and psychological boundaries that shape our world. Admission is free.

If you find yourself in Gozo, pop into the Victor Pasmore: A Retrospective at the Gozo Museum of Archaeology in Victoria. This exhibition showcases the work of British artist Victor Pasmore, known for his abstract and geometric paintings. The exhibition runs until June 30, and entry is free.

Heritage: History Comes Alive

History buffs will enjoy the Mdina Grand Parade on May 16. This annual event sees the historic city of Mdina come alive with a grand procession featuring knights in full regalia, period costumes, and traditional music. The parade starts at 7 PM, and entry is free.

For a more interactive historical experience, join the Three Cities Tour on May 17. Organized by Heritage Malta, this tour takes you through the historic cities of Vittoriosa, Senglea, and Cospicua, offering insights into their rich history and architecture. The tour starts at 9 AM from the Vittoriosa Waterfront and costs €10 per person.

As we look ahead to another week filled with cultural delights, remember to check the weather forecast and plan your outfits accordingly. Whether you’re enjoying a classical concert in Valletta or rocking out in Għajnsielem, there’s something for everyone in Malta and Gozo this week.
