Malta’s May Meltdown: A Week of Vibrant Events

As the Mediterranean sun begins to scorch the cobbled streets of Valletta, so too does the island’s cultural calendar heat up. This week, from the 11th to the 17th of May, Malta and Gozo are set to burst into a kaleidoscope of colour, sound, and flavour. So, grab your sunscreen and let’s dive into what’s on offer.

Valletta’s Art Scene Blooms

Kicking off our week is the Valletta Green Festival, transforming our capital into a lush, urban jungle. From the 11th to the 16th, Republic Street will be closed to traffic, making way for a sprawling garden market. Local nurseries will be showcasing their finest foliage, while street artists transform the city’s walls into a vibrant canvas. Don’t miss the chance to snap a selfie with the iconic ‘Love’ sign, now adorned with blooming flowers.

Gastronomic Delights in Marsaxlokk

Fancy a taste of the Mediterranean? Then head south to Marsaxlokk on the 15th for the Fish Festival. This quaint fishing village comes alive with the aroma of fresh seafood, as local chefs whip up culinary delights like aljotta and torta tal-lampuki. The harbour will be a hive of activity, with traditional boats, or luzzu, on display, and live music adding to the festive atmosphere.

Gozo’s Celtic Connection

Across the channel, our sister island Gozo is celebrating its Celtic roots. The Gozo Celtic & Norman Festival (13th to 16th) is a four-day extravaganza of music, dance, and history. The medieval Citadel in Victoria will be the epicentre, with street performances, workshops, and a grand parade. It’s a unique blend of ancient and modern, not to be missed.

As the sun sets on another week in Malta, we’re left with a sense of pride and anticipation. Pride in our rich cultural heritage, and anticipation for the weeks and months ahead, filled with more events that celebrate our unique island way of life.

So, whether you’re a local or a visitor, get out there and experience Malta and Gozo this week. After all, as the Maltese saying goes, Ħajti ħafna, ħajti ħafna – ‘Life is short, enjoy it’.
