Malta’s May Spectacular: A Week of Culture, Nature, and Fun
Imagine this: the sun is setting over the ancient walls of Mdina, casting a warm glow on the cobblestone streets. The air is filled with the aroma of fresh bread from the local bakery and the distant hum of a traditional Maltese folk band. This is Malta in May, and this week, we’ve got a lineup that’s as vibrant as the island’s wildflowers.
Cultural Delights in Valletta
Kicking off our week is the Valletta International Baroque Festival, running from May 11 to 17. This annual event transforms Malta’s capital into a living museum of Baroque art and music. Catch concerts at the historic St. John’s Co-Cathedral, or enjoy free street performances around the city’s grand squares. Don’t miss the chance to explore Valletta’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites, like the Grandmaster’s Palace and the Auberge de Castille.
On May 15, head to the Teatru Manoel for a night of opera. The Maltese Islands’ national opera house is hosting a performance of La Traviata, a tale of love and tragedy set against the backdrop of 19th-century Paris.
Nature’s Show in Gozo
If you’re craving some fresh air and stunning views, take a ferry ride to Gozo. The Azure Window Walk is back! This guided walk takes you through the rugged scene of Gozo’s west coast, passing by the iconic (and recently restored) Azure Window. The walk ends at the picturesque Dwejra Bay, where you can enjoy a well-earned swim in the crystal-clear waters.
On May 16, nature lovers should head to the Għar il-Kbir Nature Reserve in Gozo. The reserve is hosting a guided walk and talk about the island’s unique flora and fauna. Keep an eye out for the rare Maltese freshwater crab!
Fun for All in Marsaxlokk
No week in Malta is complete without a visit to the bustling Marsaxlokk Fish Market. Every Sunday, this small fishing village comes alive with the scent of fresh seafood and the chatter of locals and tourists alike. Browse the stalls, sample some local delicacies, and maybe even bring home some fresh fish for dinner.
After your market visit, take a stroll along the promenade to the Marsaxlokk Parish Church. This 17th-century church is home to a beautiful painting of the Madonna del Rosario, a revered religious icon in Malta.
And for a fun night out, check out the Marsaxlokk Street Art Festival on May 17. This annual event transforms the village’s streets into a vibrant canvas, with live street art performances, music, and food stalls.
As we look ahead to the rest of May, keep an eye out for the Malta International Food Festival, taking place in Ta’ Qali on May 23 and 24. This culinary extravaganza brings together local and international chefs, offering a mouthwatering array of dishes to try.
Quoting Maltese poet Dun Karm Psaila, “Ħajti, ħajti, Malta, ħajti” – “I love you, I love you, Malta, I love you”. This week, there’s plenty to love about our beautiful islands. So, grab your sunscreen, your comfiest shoes, and let’s make the most of it!
