PN’s €650 Pension Rise & €2,000 Grant: A Game-Changer for Malta’s Seniors?

PN’s Pension Promise: €650 Rise and €2,000 Grandparent Grant – What Malta Needs to Know

Imagine this: you’re a senior citizen, living in the heart of Rabat, Malta’s historic capital. You’ve spent your life contributing to this island nation, and now, as you enjoy your retirement, you receive a letter. It’s from the Nationalist Party (PN), and it promises a significant boost to your pension. But is this just an election promise, or a real shot at improving the lives of Malta’s seniors? Let’s look the details.

€650 Pension Rise: A breakthrough for Malta’s Seniors?

The PN has pledged to increase the state pension by €650 per year if they form the next government. This substantial rise, which would bring the state pension to €9,500 per annum, is set to benefit around 40,000 pensioners. But what does this mean for Malta’s seniors, many of whom live in areas like Zebbug, Mgarr, or Qrendi, where the cost of living can be high?

For 75-year-old Maria, who lives in Zebbug, the promise is a lifeline. “I’ve seen the cost of living rise, but my pension hasn’t kept up,” she says. “An extra €650 would make a real difference. I could afford to visit my grandchildren in Australia more often, or maybe even fix that leaky roof.”

€2,000 ‘Grandparent Grant’: A Helping Hand for Families

But the PN isn’t stopping at pensions. They’ve also promised a €2,000 ‘grandparent grant’ to help families with childcare costs. The grant, which would be paid directly to grandparents, is designed to help families who rely on their grandparents for childcare.

For 65-year-old Tony, a retired engineer from Mgarr, the grant is a practical solution. “My daughter works full-time, and she relies on me to look after the kids,” he says. “An extra €2,000 would be a big help. I could use it to fix my car, which I need to get around, or maybe even take the kids on a day trip to Comino.”

But Will the Promises Materialise?

The PN’s promises are ambitious, but they’re not without their critics. Some argue that the party hasn’t explained how they’ll fund these increases, while others question whether they’ll deliver on their promises if elected.

For now, though, Malta’s seniors are hopeful. “I’ve seen many promises come and go,” says Maria. “But I hope this time is different. I hope this time, they’ll really make a difference to our lives.”
