Reckless Races: Maltese Streets as Drag Strips

Imagine this: the hum of a revving engine echoing through the narrow streets of Birkirkara. It’s not a race car, but a regular vehicle, driven recklessly by someone who seems to think they’re on the set of ‘Fast and Furious’. This isn’t a scene from a movie, but a reality that’s been playing out on Maltese streets, captured on video and shared on social media.

Videos Gone Viral: Speeding and Stunts

In recent weeks, videos have surfaced online showing cars speeding through residential areas, performing dangerous stunts, and even driving the wrong way down one-way streets. These aren’t isolated incidents; they’re part of a worrying trend that’s got locals fuming and authorities scrambling for solutions.

One such video, shot in the quiet streets of Msida, shows a car speeding down Triq San Pawl, narrowly missing pedestrians and other vehicles. Another, filmed in the heart of Paceville, captures a car doing doughnuts in the middle of the road, sending clouds of smoke into the air.

The Human Cost

While these videos might seem like harmless fun to some, the reality is far more serious. Speeding and reckless driving put lives at risk. In 2020 alone, Malta saw 23 road fatalities, a figure that’s been steadily climbing in recent years.

Dr. Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, President of Malta, recently weighed in on the issue, stating, “We cannot tolerate such reckless behaviour. It’s not about the car or the thrill, it’s about the lives that could be lost or ruined.”

Local residents are also speaking out. Joseph Vella, a Birkirkara resident, told us, “I’m scared to let my kids play outside. These cars are a menace. It’s only a matter of time before someone gets hurt.”

Authorities Respond

The Malta Police Force has been quick to condemn the behaviour, promising increased patrols and stricter enforcement. Superintendent Richard Cachia Caruana told Hot Malta, “We’re taking this very seriously. We’ll be using all available resources to clamp down on this dangerous behaviour.”

the government is considering tougher penalties for reckless driving, including higher fines and longer license suspensions. Transport Minister Ian Borg has also called for more CCTV cameras in hotspot areas.

What Can You Do?

If you witness reckless driving, don’t hesitate to report it to the police. You can also share videos on social media, tagging the Malta Police Force and using the hashtag #DriveResponsiblyMalta to raise awareness.

Let’s take back our streets. Let’s make Malta’s roads safe again, for everyone.
