Reckless Races: Speeding Videos Emerge from Maltese Streets

Imagine this: the narrow streets of Mdina, once a silent witness to history, now echo with the roar of engines and the screech of tyres. This isn’t a scene from a Hollywood blockbuster, but a reality captured on video and shared online. A group of drivers, seemingly oblivious to the charm and fragility of our historic cities, have been caught on camera speeding and performing reckless stunts.

Viral Videos Spark Outrage

Clips showing cars speeding through Mdina, Rabat, and other towns have been circulating on social media. In one video, a car can be seen drifting around the tight corners of Mdina’s streets, kicking up dust and leaving a trail of noise. Another shows a group of cars racing along Triq San Pawl in Rabat, narrowly missing pedestrians. The videos have sparked outrage among locals and tourists alike, with many taking to social media to express their concern and disgust.

A Dangerous Trend

This isn’t an isolated incident. Similar videos have been popping up, showing cars performing doughnuts in parking lots, speeding along rural roads, and even driving the wrong way down one-way streets. The drivers, mostly young men, seem to be treating Malta’s roads as their personal racetracks. But this isn’t a game. It’s dangerous, illegal, and puts lives at risk.

Malta’s roads are not designed for such reckless behaviour. Our streets are narrow, often crowded with pedestrians and cyclists, and lined with historic buildings that could be damaged or destroyed in a collision. the noise pollution from these late-night races is disturbing the peace and quiet that many residents enjoy.

“It’s not just about the damage to property,” says Dr. Joseph Mizzi, a historian and Mdina resident. “These actions are disrespectful to our heritage and the community. They’re putting lives at risk and creating an unpleasant environment for everyone.”

Police Crackdown and Public Outcry

The Malta Police Force has confirmed that they are aware of the videos and are taking the matter seriously. They have launched an investigation and have warned that anyone caught engaging in such behaviour will face severe consequences, including fines and imprisonment.

But the police can’t be everywhere at once. It’s up to us, the community, to help put an end to this dangerous trend. If you witness reckless driving, report it to the police. If you know someone who’s involved, encourage them to stop. Let’s take back our streets and make Malta safe and enjoyable for everyone.

As for the drivers involved, they might think they’re just having fun. But they’re not. They’re putting lives at risk, damaging our heritage, and disturbing our peace. It’s time to grow up and act responsibly.

Let’s make sure that the next time Mdina’s streets echo with the sound of engines, it’s because of a classic car rally, not reckless races.
