Reckless Racing: The Dangerous Dash Through Malta’s Streets

Imagine this: a group of youngsters, revving their engines on Triq San Pawl in Rabat, late at night. They’re not just cruising, they’re speeding, weaving in and out of traffic, performing dangerous stunts. And they’re filming it all, laughing, thinking it’s a thrill, a dare. But it’s more than that. It’s reckless, it’s dangerous, and it’s happening right here in Malta.

Viral Videos, Real Consequences

These videos, uploaded on social media, are going viral. They’re getting likes, shares, and comments cheering them on. But what they’re not seeing is the potential danger, the real-life consequences. They’re not seeing the families walking home from dinner, the elderly crossing the street, the children playing in the park.

One such video, shot on Triq Il-Kunsill in Msida, shows a car speeding, the driver barely in control, swerving to avoid oncoming traffic. In the background, you can hear the passengers cheering, egging him on. This isn’t fun. This is a disaster waiting to happen.

Malta’s Road Safety Crisis

Malta has a road safety crisis. According to the Malta Today, we have one of the highest road fatality rates in Europe. In 2020, 33 people lost their lives on our roads. And while not all of these were due to reckless driving, many were.

Our roads are narrow, our drivers are impatient, and our enforcement is often lax. Add to that the thrill-seeking behavior of some young drivers, and you have a recipe for disaster.

What Can Be Done?

So, what can be done? For starters, we need stricter penalties for reckless driving. We need more visible policing on our roads. We need better driver education, teaching not just how to pass a test, but how to be a responsible driver.

We also need to change our culture. We need to make it clear that this kind of behavior is not acceptable. It’s not cool, it’s not funny, it’s dangerous and it’s selfish. We need to make it clear that if you’re caught driving recklessly, you will face the consequences.

Let’s make our roads safe, not just for ourselves, but for everyone. Let’s make Malta a place where you can drive without fear, where you can walk without worry, where you can live without loss.

“We need to change the mindset. We need to make people understand that driving is a privilege, not a right. And with that privilege comes responsibility.” – Inspector Joseph Cuschieri, Malta Police
