Reckless Racing: Maltese Streets as Drag Strips

Imagine this: it’s a Saturday night in Paceville, the heart of Malta’s nightlife. You’re walking home from a late dinner, enjoying the cool Mediterranean breeze. Suddenly, the peace is shattered. A car, its engine roaring like a beast unleashed, comes tearing around the corner. It’s not just speeding; it’s performing doughnuts, fishtailing, leaving rubber on the road. And guess what? It’s all caught on camera.

Viral Videos: A New Trend?

This isn’t an isolated incident. Videos of reckless driving in Malta have been popping up on social media, leaving locals and authorities alike in a spin. From speeding through quiet residential streets in Msida to joyriding down the Triq San Ġorġ in Birkirkara, these daredevil drivers are turning our roads into their personal racetracks. And they’re filming it all, hoping to go viral.

One such video, showing a car speeding through the narrow streets of Rabat, has racked up thousands of views. The driver, laughing and whooping, can be heard on the video’s audio. The comments section is a mix of shock, anger, and, worryingly, admiration. “This is what we do for fun in Malta,” one user commented, with a laughing emoji.

More Than Just Speeding

It’s not just about speed. These drivers are performing stunts, putting not just their own lives at risk, but also those of pedestrians and other road users. In one video, a car can be seen driving the wrong way down a one-way street in Valletta, narrowly missing oncoming traffic. In another, a driver performs a handbrake turn in a crowded car park, coming within inches of a family’s car.

But why? Why are these drivers risking so much for a few seconds of internet fame? “It’s a combination of factors,” says Dr. Mario Vella, a psychologist who specializes in risk-taking behavior. “Peer pressure, the thrill of the unknown, the desire for recognition… it’s a complex mix.”

What’s Being Done?

The Malta Police Force has been quick to respond, warning that such behavior will not be tolerated. “We are aware of these videos and we are taking them very seriously,” a spokesperson said. “We will be increasing patrols in the areas where these incidents have been reported, and we urge anyone with information to come forward.”

But enforcement is only part of the solution. Education is also key. The Malta Road Safety Council is planning a campaign to target young drivers, highlighting the dangers of reckless driving. “We want to make them understand that it’s not just about them,” says council chairman, Andrew Zammit. “It’s about everyone they could hurt, everyone whose life they could ruin.”

And what about the drivers themselves? Some have been identified and have apologized publicly, claiming it was a “stupid mistake” and promising never to do it again. But others remain at large, their identities hidden behind usernames and profile pictures.

So, what’s next? More videos? More warnings? Or will something finally give these reckless drivers pause? . But one thing is for sure: Malta’s roads are no place for a drag strip.
