Reckless Racing: Maltese Streets Turned into Asphalt Playgrounds

Imagine this: it’s a quiet Sunday evening in Msida, the sun is setting, and residents are enjoying a peaceful stroll along the promenade. Suddenly, the calm is shattered by the roar of engines. A group of cars, speeding and weaving dangerously, comes into view. This wasn’t a scene from a Fast and Furious movie, but a real-life incident caught on video and shared on social media, sparking outrage among Maltese.

Videos Surface, Outrage Ensues

Over the past week, several videos have surfaced on social media, showing groups of young drivers recklessly speeding and performing dangerous maneuvers on public roads. The clips, filmed from inside the cars, show vehicles swerving between lanes, speeding through residential areas, and even driving the wrong way down one-way streets. The locations range from Msida and Birkirkara to Paceville and St. Julian’s, with some videos showing iconic landmarks like the Triton Fountain and Spinola Bay in the background.

Reactions have been swift and furious. “This is not a video game,” commented one user on Facebook. “These are our streets, where our children play and our elderly walk,” another user added. The videos have been shared thousands of times, with many calling for the drivers to be identified and held accountable.

Police Launch Investigation, Calls for Tougher Laws

The Malta Police Force has launched an investigation into the incidents, appealing to the public for information that could help identify the drivers. Superintendent of Police, Edwin Vass, told Hot Malta, “We take these incidents very seriously. Reckless driving puts lives at risk and will not be tolerated.”

Meanwhile, calls for tougher penalties and stricter enforcement of existing laws have grown louder. Opposition MP Jason Azzopardi has proposed amendments to the Road Traffic Act, including harsher fines and the possibility of license suspensions for repeat offenders. “We need to send a clear message that this kind of behavior will not be tolerated,” he said.

Community Response: “We Won’t Stand for This”

Community groups and local councils have also weighed in. The Birkirkara Local Council issued a statement condemning the actions, stating, “We urge the public to report any such incidents to the police. Together, we can make our streets safer.”

A group called ‘Safer Streets Malta’ has been formed on Facebook, with over 5,000 members in just a few days. The group aims to raise awareness about the issue and put pressure on authorities to take action. “We won’t stand for our streets being turned into racetracks,” said the group’s administrator, who wished to remain anonymous.

Hot Malta reached out to several of the drivers involved. While most declined to comment, one driver, who wished to remain anonymous, admitted to being in one of the videos. “It was stupid,” he said. “I let my friends talk me into it. I realize now how dangerous it was and I’m sorry.”

What’s Next?

The police investigation is ongoing, and more charges are expected to be laid. The proposed amendments to the Road Traffic Act are set to be debated in Parliament next month. In the meantime, the community has made it clear that they want action. “We need to make sure our streets are safe for everyone,” said Superintendent Vass. “We urge the public to continue reporting any incidents of reckless driving.”
