Unveiling Masterpieces, Unlocking Memories: Lecture Series at St John’s Co-Cathedral
Imagine standing in the heart of Valletta, the sun casting a warm glow on the grand façade of St John’s Co-Cathedral. Now, picture yourself not just admiring the Baroque architecture, but delving into the stories behind the masterpieces that adorn its walls. This is precisely what’s in store for you this autumn, as the Art, Memory, and Identity lecture series takes centre stage at Malta’s most revered church.
Art Unveiled: A Journey Through Time
The series, organised by the St John’s Co-Cathedral Foundation, promises to shed new light on the cathedral’s art collection, one of the most significant in Europe. Each lecture will explore a different aspect of the cathedral’s history and art, guided by experts in their fields.
Kicking off on 21st September, the series will take you on a journey from the cathedral’s inception in the 16th century to the present day. You’ll learn about the artists who left their mark on its walls, from Caravaggio to Mattia Preti, and the stories behind their iconic works.
Memory and Identity: The Cathedral’s Role in Malta’s Story
But this isn’t just a history lesson. The lectures will also explore the role St John’s Co-Cathedral has played in shaping Malta’s identity and collective memory. From its role as a symbol of Maltese resilience during the Great Siege of 1565 to its transformation into a cultural hub today, the cathedral’s story is intertwined with that of the island nation.
Dr. Kenneth Gambin, Director of the St John’s Co-Cathedral Foundation, explains, “This series is an opportunity to engage with our cultural heritage in a new way. It’s about understanding not just what’s on our walls, but what it means to us as Maltese.”
Join the Conversation
The lectures are open to the public, with each session followed by a Q&A. It’s a chance to ask questions, share insights, and be part of a conversation about art, history, and identity. Whether you’re a history buff, an art enthusiast, or simply curious about the stories hidden in plain sight, there’s something here for everyone.
So, mark your calendars for the next few months. The first lecture, “The Making of St John’s Co-Cathedral: Architecture, Art, and Devotion,” takes place on 21st September at 6 pm. Tickets are €10 for each lecture or €30 for the full series. For more information, visit St John’s Co-Cathedral’s website.
As Dr. Gambin puts it, “This is more than just a lecture series. It’s an invitation to engage with our past, understand our present, and imagine our future.”
