Valletta Crash Trial Nears End: Prosecutors Summarize Case Against Driver
Valletta’s bustling Republic Street was a scene of chaos and tragedy last year when a speeding car mounted the pavement, fatally striking a pedestrian. Now, after months of witness testimonies and legal arguments, the prosecution has wrapped up its case against the driver charged with causing the fatal crash.
Recapping the Tragic Incident
On that fateful evening of March 15, 2021, 32-year-old Andrew Azzopardi was behind the wheel of his Audi A3 when he lost control of the vehicle near the historic Auberge de Castille. The car careered onto the pavement, fatally injuring 65-year-old Joseph Xuereb, a retired teacher who was out for an evening stroll.
Prosecution’s Closing Arguments
The prosecution, led by Inspector Keith Mercieca, has argued that Azzopardi was driving at excessive speed and under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. They presented evidence from eyewitnesses, CCTV footage, and expert witnesses to support their case. The prosecution also highlighted Azzopardi’s alleged attempt to flee the scene before being apprehended by police.
“The defendant’s actions that night were reckless and irresponsible,” Mercieca told the court. “His speed, his alcohol consumption, and his attempt to evade justice have all contributed to the tragic loss of life that night.”
Defense’s Stance and Upcoming Hearing
The defense, led by Dr. Edward Gatt, has maintained that Azzopardi was not driving under the influence and that the crash was an unfortunate accident. They have argued that the prosecution’s case is based on circumstantial evidence and that the true cause of the crash remains uncertain.
With the prosecution’s case now closed, the defense will present its arguments in the coming weeks. The court will then adjourn to consider its verdict, with the next hearing scheduled for June 15.
For Joseph Xuereb’s family, the legal process has been a long and painful journey. His daughter, Maria Xuereb, told Hot Malta, “We just want justice for our father. We want to know the truth about what happened that night.”
As the trial nears its conclusion, Valletta residents and Maltese across the country await the court’s decision, hoping that it will bring some measure of closure to the Xuereb family and serve as a reminder of the importance of responsible driving.
