Tragedy Strikes: Four-year-old Boy in Critical Condition After Pool Accident

Emergency services rushed to a quiet residential street in Birkirkara this afternoon, where a four-year-old boy was pulled from a private swimming pool, unresponsive and in critical condition. The toddler, who has been identified as little Matthew, was immediately transported to Mater Dei Hospital, where he remains in the intensive care unit, fighting for his life.

Witnesses Recall Horrifying Scene

Neighbors and witnesses described the scene as chaotic and heart-wrenching. “I heard screams coming from next door,” said Maria, a long-time resident of the street. “I ran out and saw the little boy’s mother, distraught, screaming for help. It was terrifying.” Another neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous, recounted, “I’ve never seen anything like it. The paramedics worked on him right there in the driveway before rushing him to the hospital.”

The boy’s family has asked for privacy during this difficult time, but neighbors have rallied around them, setting up a prayer vigil outside their home and organizing a blood donation drive at the nearby St. Joseph’s Church.

Pool Safety in Malta: A Wake-up Call

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of pool safety, especially during Malta’s hot summers. According to the Malta Resuscitation Council, drowning is a leading cause of accidental death among children under five. Hot Malta reached out to Dr. Joseph Cuschieri, a pediatrician at Mater Dei Hospital, who emphasized, “Pool safety is not just about fences and alarms. It’s about constant supervision and education. We need to remind ourselves that it takes just a few seconds for a tragedy to happen.”

In light of this incident, local councils are urging residents to ensure their pools are secure and to never leave young children unattended near water. The Malta Resuscitation Council is also offering free pool safety workshops to parents and guardians.

If you or someone you know needs support following this incident, please reach out to the Malta Association of Psychologists or the Richmond Foundation.
