Abela Vows ‘We Can Deliver’ at Labour Rally

Abela’s Pledge: “We Know We Can Deliver” at Labour Party Rally

St. George’s Square, Valletta, was a sea of red and white last Saturday, as Prime Minister Robert Abela addressed thousands of Labour Party supporters. The message was clear: “We know we can deliver on all our promises.” But what does this mean for Malta’s future?

Promises Made, Promises Kept?

Abela’s speech was a walk down memory lane, reminding the crowd of the party’s achievements since it took office in 2013. From the controversial yet popular Citizenship by Investment scheme to the ongoing Affordable Housing project, Abela stressed that Labour has a track record of delivering on its promises.

“We said we would improve the economy, and we did. We said we would make housing more affordable, and we are. We said we would invest in education, and we have,” Abela told the cheering crowd.

: The 2027 Election

But Abela’s speech was also a look into the future, with the 2027 general election already on the horizon. The Prime Minister outlined Labour’s vision for Malta’s next decade, promising to continue investing in infrastructure, education, and healthcare.

He also touched on hot-button issues like the environment, pledging to make Malta a carbon-neutral country by 2050. “We will protect our islands for future generations,” Abela said, to applause.

Challenges Ahead: The Great Housing Debate

However, not all promises were met with enthusiasm. Abela’s pledge to build 10,000 new affordable homes by 2027 drew mixed reactions. While some supporters cheered, others booed, reflecting the ongoing debate about development and housing in Malta.

Critics argue that Labour’s housing plans prioritize quantity over quality, leading to overcrowding and urban sprawl. But Abela remains undeterred, insisting that “we will continue to build, because we know we can deliver.”

As the rally ended and the crowd dispersed, one supporter, Maria, a 55-year-old nurse from Birkirkara, told Hot Malta, “I believe in Robert. He’s young, he’s passionate, and he knows what he’s doing. I trust that he will deliver on his promises.”
