Alex Borg: Malta’s Architectural Maverick

In the heart of Valletta, Malta’s capital city, stands a unique building. It’s not the grand palaces or historic churches that draw the eye, but a contemporary structure that seems to defy the city’s traditional architecture. This is the work of Alex Borg, an architect who has been both praised and criticized for his innovative designs. But Borg has a simple response to his critics: “They criticise us, then they copy us.”

Breaking the Mold in Valletta

Borg’s most controversial project, the ‘Gattard House’, stands on Republic Street, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The building’s stark white facade and modern design have sparked debate among locals and tourists alike. Some see it as a refreshing addition to the cityscape, while others view it as a jarring intrusion into Valletta’s historic fabric.

“I wanted to create something that would stand out, that would make people think,” Borg says, sitting in his office in Msida, another town that bears his architectural stamp. “Valletta is a historic city, yes, but it’s also a living, breathing place. It needs to evolve.”

From Criticism to Copycats

Borg’s designs have often been met with criticism, but he argues that this is a sign of success. “When you’re doing something different, something innovative, you’re always going to face criticism,” he says. “But look around. What was once criticized is now being copied.”

Indeed, Borg points to several recent projects in Valletta that echo his modernist style. “They might not admit it, but they’re following our lead,” he says with a smile. “That’s how progress happens. Someone does something new, and others follow.”

Borg’s influence extends beyond Valletta. His designs can be seen in other towns around Malta, from the sleek ‘Portomaso’ development in St. Julian’s to the ‘SmartCity’ project in Malta’s Silicon Island, Kalkara. His work is a testament to Malta’s evolving architectural scene, reflecting the island’s transformation from a historic outpost to a modern, cosmopolitan nation.

Borg’s vision for Malta’s future is clear: “We need to embrace innovation, to look forward while respecting our past. That’s the only way we’ll continue to grow and evolve.”

As we wrap up our conversation, Borg looks out at the bustling streets of Msida, a city that bears his architectural signature. “This is just the beginning,” he says. “Malta has so much potential. I can’t wait to see what the future holds.”
