Gozo Business Lobby Pushes for Marsalforn Ferry Landing and Logistics Hub

Gozo’s Business Community Charts a New Course: Marsalforn Ferry Landing and Logistics Hub on the Horizon

Imagine, for a moment, the bustling scene at Ċirkewwa’s ferry terminal. The air is filled with the hum of engines, the chatter of passengers, and the distant honk of cars waiting their turn. Now, picture this same energy, but instead of the mainland, the ferries are heading towards Gozo’s Marsalforn Bay. This isn’t a dreamt-up scene from a local film, but a vision that Gozo’s business lobby is actively pushing for.

The Case for Marsalforn: A Seaport with Potential

Marsalforn, with its picturesque bay and vibrant village, could soon become Gozo’s primary seaport. The Gozo Business Chamber (GBC) is championing this cause, arguing that Marsalforn’s deeper waters and proximity to the island’s main road network make it an ideal location for a new ferry landing.

“Marsalforn has been overlooked for too long,” says Joseph Borg, President of the GBC. “Its potential as a seaport is immense. It could significantly improve Gozo’s connectivity and boost our economy.”

A New Logistics Hub: The GBC’s Master Plan

The GBC’s vision doesn’t stop at a new ferry landing. They’re also proposing the development of a state-of-the-art logistics hub in Marsalforn. This hub would serve as a distribution center, supporting both local businesses and international companies looking to tap into the Mediterranean market.

“Gozo is perfectly positioned to become a logistics hub,” explains Borg. “We have the space, the workforce, and the strategic location. With the right infrastructure, we could attract significant investment and create jobs.”

The GBC’s plans also include proposals for improved road infrastructure, better public transport, and even a potential light rail system connecting Marsalforn to other parts of Gozo and the ferry terminal.

Challenges and Next Steps

While the GBC’s proposals are ambitious, they’re not without their challenges. Environmental concerns, funding, and political will are just a few of the hurdles that need to be overcome. But the GBC is undeterred, and they’re already in talks with the government, local councils, and other stakeholders to turn their vision into reality.

“We’re confident that, with the right support, Marsalforn can become Gozo’s engine of growth,” says Borg. “We’re not just thinking about the present, but about Gozo’s future and the legacy we want to leave behind.”

As the ferry pulls away from Ċirkewwa, heading towards Gozo, one can’t help but wonder: could Marsalforn be the next big thing on the island? , but one thing’s for sure – the business community is making its voice heard, and it’s charting a new course for Gozo.
