Gozo Businesses Push for Marsalforn Ferry Landing, Logistics Hub

Gozo Businesses Eye Marsalforn Ferry Landing, New Logistics Hub

Picture this: a bustling Marsalforn, the sun setting over the Comino Channel, and a steady stream of ferries docking at a brand new landing. This isn’t a scene from a dream, but a vision painted by Gozo’s business community. They’re pushing for a new ferry landing in Marsalforn and a state-of-the-art logistics hub to boost the sister island’s economy.

The Case for Marsalforn

Marsalforn, the vibrant seaside village, is more than just a tourist hotspot. It’s a strategic location, argue local business owners. The proposed ferry landing, they believe, would significantly improve connectivity between Gozo and Malta. Currently, ferries from Gozo mostly dock at Ċirkewwa, a 45-minute drive from Marsalforn. A landing in Marsalforn could cut that travel time in half, benefiting both residents and businesses.

“Marsalforn is central, it’s accessible, and it’s crying out for better connectivity,” says Joe Borg, a local entrepreneur and one of the leading voices behind this initiative. “We’re not talking about a massive project here. A small, efficient landing would make a world of difference.”

A Logistics Hub for Gozo

But the business lobby isn’t stopping at a ferry landing. They’re also pushing for a new logistics hub, a first for Gozo. The idea is to create a modern, efficient facility that could handle everything from cargo to waste management. The hub would be built on the site of the current Gozo Waste Management Facility in Xewkija, a location that’s central and easily accessible.

“We want to create a facility that’s not just a step up from what we have now, but a leap forward,” explains Borg. “A hub that could handle everything from cargo to recycling, all under one roof. It’s about efficiency, about making the most of our limited space.”

Next Steps

The plans are still in their early stages, but the business community is wasting no time. They’re already in talks with the Government, presenting their case and pushing for action. They’re also reaching out to the public, hosting meetings and gathering feedback. “This is about more than just business,” says Borg. “It’s about improving life for everyone in Gozo.”

So, could Marsalforn soon become Gozo’s gateway to the world? . But one thing’s for sure: the island’s business community is making its voice heard, and it’s not going away anytime soon.
