Gozo Celebrates Europe Day at Villa Rundle Gardens
Europe Day Blooms in Gozo: A Celebration at Villa Rundle Gardens
Under the sprawling branches of the ancient carob trees, the scent of spring filled the air at Villa Rundle Gardens. It was here, in the heart of Gozo, that the island’s annual Europe Day celebrations unfolded. But this year was different. The pandemic had kept us apart, but now, as restrictions eased, the gardens buzzed with a renewed sense of unity and hope.
From Brussels to Rabat: A European Affair
Europe Day, commemorating peace and unity, has been celebrated across Malta and Gozo since 2004. This year, despite the challenges, the Gozo Regional Committee ensured the spirit of the occasion was not lost. The event, held on the 9th of May, marked the anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, the birth of the European Union.
The gardens, a stone’s throw from the historic Citadel, were transformed. Red and gold EU flags fluttered in the breeze, while stalls offering local delicacies and European specialties lined the pathways. Children chased bubbles, their laughter echoing through the trees, a reminder of simpler times.
Celebrating Togetherness, One Bubble at a Time
At the heart of the celebrations was a message of unity. “Europe Day is about coming together,” said Dr. George Grech, Chairperson of the Gozo Regional Committee. “It’s about celebrating our shared history, culture, and future.” Speeches were followed by music, with local artists performing a mix of Maltese and European tunes.
Among the crowd was Maria, a retiree from Xewkija. “I’ve seen many Europe Days,” she said, “but this one feels special. It’s like we’re finally coming out of the dark.” Her eyes sparkled as she watched children playing, their faces painted with EU stars.
A Glimpse into the Future
The event also showcased Gozo’s European-funded projects. From the new Gozo General Hospital to the sustainable mobility initiatives, the EU’s impact on the island was evident. “These projects are about more than just infrastructure,” said Dr. Grech. “They’re about creating a better future for our children.”
As the sun set, casting a golden glow over the gardens, the crowd gathered for the finale – a spectacular bubble show. Thousands of bubbles, each one a symbol of unity, floated into the night sky, carrying with them the hopes and dreams of a Europe that is stronger, together.
