Malta Election 2023: Your District’s Candidates Revealed

The Malta Election Candidates: A District-by-District Guide

As Malta gears up for the 2023 General Election, the political scene is abuzz with activity. The candidates, the backbone of our democratic process, have been finalised. So, who’s running in your district? Let’s dive into the candidate lists, district by district.

Sliema, St. Julian’s, and Pembroke: The Northern Hub

Kicking off in the bustling northern region, Sliema sees a mix of familiar faces and new contenders. Incumbent Minister Owen Bonnici is seeking re-election, joined by first-timers like lawyer and environmental activist Rachel Micallef. In St. Julian’s, former Minister for Tourism Konrad Mizzi is back in the fray, facing off against newcomer and local businesswoman Justine Attard. Pembroke, meanwhile, welcomes back incumbent Minister Carmelo Abela, challenged by lawyer and community activist Daniel Borg.

Birkirkara, Fgura, and Zabbar: The Central Triangle

In the central districts, Birkirkara sees a three-way race between incumbent Minister Clayton Bartolo, lawyer and community activist Marthese Portelli, and first-timer and entrepreneur Ryan Grech. Fgura and Zabbar, traditionally Labour strongholds, see incumbents Robert Abela and Edwin Vassallo respectively, facing no formal opposition but expected to face independent candidates.

Zejtun, Marsascala, and Marsaxlokk: The Southern Shores

Down south, Zejtun welcomes back incumbent Minister Deo Debattista, challenged by lawyer and community activist Maria Dimech. Marsascala sees incumbent Minister Ian Borg seeking re-election, facing off against first-timer and local fisherman Joseph Muscat (not to be confused with the former Prime Minister). Marsaxlokk, known for its traditional fishing village, sees incumbent Minister Anton Refalo seeking re-election, challenged by lawyer and environmental activist Simon Mercieca.

Gozo: The Sister Island

Across the channel, Gozo sees a mix of incumbents and new faces. Incumbent Minister Clint Camilleri is seeking re-election, joined by first-timers like lawyer and community activist Charlene Muscat. In Nadur, incumbent Minister Justyne Caruana is challenged by first-timer and local farmer John Attard.

With the candidate lists finalised, the campaign trail heats up. As you navigate the political scene, remember, every vote counts. So, who’s on your ballot? The choice is yours, Malta.
