Malta Man’s Obsession: Probation After Flood of Messages

It’s not a group chat gone wild, it’s your ex-partner, sending you message after message, day and night. This wasn’t a hypothetical scenario for a local woman who recently found herself at the center of a legal storm.

A man, let’s call him Joe for privacy, couldn’t let go of his ex-partner. He started sending her messages, hundreds of them, day and night. He’d message her on WhatsApp, Facebook, even LinkedIn. He’d send her emails, and when she changed her number, he’d find ways to reach her again. It was a deluge of messages that left her feeling harassed and frightened.

She tried to reason with him, but Joe was relentless. He’d promise to stop, only to start again a few days later. Exasperated, she turned to the law. She obtained a restraining order, but even that didn’t stop Joe. He continued to send messages, this time taunting her about the order.

Finally, Joe’s actions landed him in court. The magistrate heard the woman’s testimony, saw the screenshots of the messages, and the restraining order. Joe pleaded guilty to breaching the restraining order and was handed a 12-month probation order. He was also ordered to pay his ex-partner €500 in compensation.

Magistrate Dr Donatella Frendo Dimech warned Joe, “This behavior is unacceptable. You must respect the other person’s space and wishes.”

Probation orders are not uncommon in Malta, especially in cases like these where the crime is not violent but persistent and harmful. During probation, Joe will have to meet regularly with a probation officer, who will monitor his behavior and provide support if needed.

Joe’s lawyer, speaking outside the court, said, “My client understands the gravity of his actions. He’s committed to making amends and moving forward.”

This case serves as a stark reminder of others’ boundaries, especially in relationships. It’s a hard lesson learned, but one that could save many from the pain and fear that Joe’s actions caused.

For the woman at the center of this storm, it’s a relief. She can finally move on, knowing that the law is on her side. She told Hot Malta, “I just want to live my life without fear. I hope my story helps others to stand up for themselves.”
