Malta’s Alex Borg: ‘They Criticise, Then They Copy’
‘They criticise us, then they copy us’ – Alex Borg
In the heart of Valletta, at the bustling Strait Street, a man stands out. Alex Borg, a local entrepreneur, is known for his audacious ideas and unapologetic attitude. His latest venture, a unique coworking space, has sparked controversy and admiration in equal measure. “They criticise us,” he says, leaning back in his chair, “then they copy us.”
From Controversy to Copycats
Borg’s coworking space, Impact Hub Malta, is not your average office. It’s a vibrant hub of creativity, where artists, entrepreneurs, and activists share space and ideas. The concept has drawn criticism from some traditionalists, who see it as a departure from Malta’s conservative business culture. But Borg is unfazed. “Change always meets resistance,” he shrugs.
Yet, despite the initial backlash, the concept is catching on. Similar spaces are popping up across Malta, from Sliema to Birkirkara. Borg smirks, “I’ve seen our critics’ faces when they walk into these new spaces. They realise we were onto something.”
Malta’s Changing scene
Borg’s story is a microcosm of Malta’s shifting scene. The island nation, long known for its stable political environment and strong economy, is now embracing innovation and entrepreneurship. The government’s Startup Malta initiative, for instance, is fostering a culture of enterprise. Borg welcomes this change. “Malta needs more risk-takers,” he says.
But Borg also acknowledges the challenges. “We’re a small island. It’s easy to get stuck in old ways of thinking.” He believes it’s up to individuals like him to challenge the status quo. “We need to keep pushing, keep innovating. That’s the only way we’ll stay relevant in this globalised world.”
Borg’s next project? He’s tight-lipped, but hints at something big. “It’s about connecting Malta to the rest of the world,” he teases. Whatever it is, one thing’s for sure – it won’t be business as usual.
As we wrap up, Borg looks out at the bustling street below. “Malta’s changing,” he says, a determined gleam in his eye. “And I’m going to be at the forefront of that change.”
