Malta’s Average Book Buyer: 3 Titles a Year

Maltese Bookworms: Three Titles a Year, Says New Study

Imagine strolling down Republic Street on a sunny afternoon. You pass by the bustling cafes, the historic buildings, and then, you spot it – a bookstore. It’s not just any bookstore; it’s one that’s seen an increase in foot traffic, thanks to a surprising new finding. The average Maltese buys three books a year, according to a recent study by the National Book Council.

From Three to None: The COVID-19 Impact

The study, conducted pre-COVID, paints a picture of a nation with a healthy appetite for literature. However, the pandemic has thrown a spanner in the works. Local bookstores, like the iconic Books etc. in Sliema, have seen a dip in sales. “We’ve noticed a shift towards online purchases,” says owner, Mario Vella. “But physical books are still our bread and butter.”

E-books and Audiobooks: The New Normal?

With the rise of e-books and audiobooks, the Maltese reading habit is evolving. The National Book Council’s study indicates that 40% of Maltese readers have tried e-books, with 15% preferring them over physical copies. Local libraries, like the Malta National Library, have seen an increase in digital loans, reflecting this shift.

“We’re seeing more people signing up for our e-library services,” says librarian, Maria Grech. “It’s a trend that’s here to stay, I think.”

Local Authors: Malta’s Literary Scene Thrives

Despite the changes, Malta’s literary scene is thriving. Local authors like Clare Azzopardi and Immanuel Mifsud are gaining international recognition. The Malta Book Festival, held annually at the Mġarr ix-Xini, continues to draw large crowds.

“Malta’s literary scene is vibrant and diverse,” says Azzopardi. “The fact that the average Maltese buys three books a year shows that there’s a hunger for stories.”

So, the next time you’re in a bookstore, remember, you’re not alone in your love for books. You’re part of a community of readers, each with three new titles a year to share, discuss, and enjoy.
