Malta’s Electoral Canvas: Who’s Running Where?
Malta’s Electoral Canvas: A District-by-District Snapshot of Candidates
As the sun sets over the Grandmaster’s Palace in Valletta, the political machinery of Malta gears up for another electoral marathon. With nomination day behind us, the full list of candidates has been unveiled, painting a vivid picture of the electoral scene. So, who’s running where, and what do we need to know?
Districts in the Spotlight
Malta’s electoral districts are more than just geographical boundaries; they’re communities with their unique identities and concerns. Let’s take a whirlwind tour of the five districts, from the historic streets of Ħamrun to the coastal charm of St. Julian’s.
Ħamrun & Santa Verna
In the heart of Malta, Ħamrun and Santa Verna have always been hotbeds of political activity. This time around, the Labour Party (PL) has fielded eight candidates, while the Nationalist Party (PN) has seven. The Democratic Party (PD) and Imperium Europa (IE) are also in the mix, each with one candidate. Issues like housing and traffic congestion are expected to take center stage here.
Sliema, St. Julian’s & Gżira
These coastal districts, known for their vibrant nightlife and tourist hotspots, have a total of 22 candidates vying for your vote. The PL leads with 11 candidates, followed by the PN with 10. The PD and IE each have one candidate. Affordable housing, tourism management, and environmental sustainability are likely to be key talking points.
Birkirkara & Lija
Birkirkara, Malta’s most populous locality, and its neighbor Lija have a combined total of 26 candidates. The PL has 13, the PN has 12, with the PD and IE fielding one candidate each. Birkirkara’s bustling commercial hub and Lija’s rural charm make for an interesting contrast, with candidates likely to focus on issues like infrastructure, commerce, and urban planning.
Parties in the Running
While the PL and PN dominate the electoral scene, smaller parties are also making their presence felt. The PD, led by former PN MP Godfrey Farrugia, is contesting all districts, focusing on issues like corruption and good governance. IE, meanwhile, is running on a Eurosceptic platform, with candidates in four districts.
