Local Man Avoids Jail After Flooding Ex-Partner’s Inbox
Imagine waking up to over 200 messages on your phone, not from friends or family, but from your ex-partner. This was the reality for a local woman, as a man from Msida found himself in hot water after bombarding her with messages, leading to a probation order.
From Love to Litigation
In a twist of events that began with love and ended in legal action, a 35-year-old man from Msida found himself standing before Magistrate Donatella Frendo in the Criminal Court earlier this week. The man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the victim, was charged with harassment and breach of peace after sending over 200 messages to his ex-partner over a period of three days.
The victim, a 32-year-old woman from Birkirkara, told the court that the messages started pouring in at an alarming rate, keeping her awake at night and causing her immense distress. “It was like being trapped in a nightmare,” she said, her voice wavering as she recounted the ordeal. “I couldn’t escape the constant buzzing of my phone, and when I blocked his number, he’d just switch to another one.”
Legal Recourse and Probation
After seeking legal advice, the woman reported the matter to the police. The man was subsequently arrested and charged. In her judgment, Magistrate Frendo highlighted the seriousness of the offence, stating, “Harassment can have severe psychological effects on the victim, and it will not be tolerated.” However, she also took into account the man’s clean criminal record and his remorse, sentencing him to a 12-month probation order.
“This case serves as a stark reminder that harassment is a criminal offence,” said Inspector Joseph Mercieca, who led the investigation. “We urge anyone who finds themselves in a similar situation to report it immediately. No one deserves to be subjected to such treatment.”
