Man’s Harassment Messages Land Him Probation Order

Imagine this: your phone buzzes relentlessly, not with friendly chatter, but with a ceaseless stream of messages from an ex-partner who just won’t let go. This was the reality for a local woman, until last week when her harasser was handed a probation order in court.

At the heart of this story lies a familiar street in Msida, where the victim lived. The man, a 35-year-old local resident, had been in a relationship with the woman for several years. After their split, however, he struggled to accept the breakup, resorting to constant messaging and calls that turned increasingly hostile.

The woman, a 32-year-old professional, described her ordeal to Hot Malta, “It started with persistent messages, then calls at all hours, and finally, threats. I felt trapped, scared even, in my own home.”

Tired and frightened, the woman turned to the law. She filed a report with the police, who swiftly launched an investigation. The man was eventually charged under the Peace and Justice Act, which prohibits harassment and stalking.

Last week, the case reached the Law Courts in Valletta. The man pleaded guilty and was handed a 12-month probation order, along with a €500 fine. The judge also ordered him to undergo counseling to address his behavior.

“Today’s verdict sends a clear message,” said Inspector Joseph Vella, the investigating officer. “Harassment and stalking will not be tolerated. We encourage anyone facing such issues to come forward and report it.”

Local NGOs like Dar Tal-Providenza and KOPIN have been at the forefront of supporting victims of harassment and raising awareness. “We’re seeing an increase in such cases,” said Maria Grech, a counselor at KOPIN. “It’s crucial for victims to know they’re not alone and to seek help.”
