Motorcyclist Injured in Gozo’s Xewkija Crash
Biker Down: Motorcyclist Injured in Gozo’s Xewkija
In the heart of Gozo, the peaceful village of Xewkija was shattered by the screech of brakes and the crunch of metal on Tuesday afternoon. A motorcyclist lay injured in the road, the victim of a collision that has left the close-knit community shaken.
The Crash Scene
The incident occurred at around 3 PM near the iconic Rotunda of Xewkija, a landmark that has stood watch over the village for centuries. Witnesses described a scene of chaos as the biker, a 35-year-old man from Msida, was thrown from his motorcycle after colliding with a car at the busy roundabout.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, with an ambulance from Gozo General Hospital arriving within minutes. The motorcyclist was stabilized and airlifted to Mater Dei Hospital in Malta, where he remains in a stable condition. The driver of the car, a 52-year-old man from Xewkija, was uninjured but visibly shaken.
Local Reaction
Xewkija residents have been left reeling by the crash. “It’s not the first time something like this has happened here,” said Mario, a local shopkeeper. “We need to do something about the traffic in this village. It’s getting too dangerous.”
Gozo’s MEP, David Casa, echoed these concerns. “Our hearts go out to the motorcyclist and his family. This incident underscores the need for better road safety measures in Gozo. We must act now to prevent more tragedies.”
Road Safety in Malta
This collision is the latest in a string of road incidents involving motorcyclists in Malta and Gozo. According to the Malta Police, there have been over 100 motorcycle-related accidents so far this year, with 15 resulting in serious injuries.
Malta’s Road Safety Council has been working tirelessly to address this issue. They’ve launched campaigns encouraging motorcyclists to wear protective gear and reminding drivers to look out for bikers. “Education and awareness are key,” said Council Chairperson, Dr. Maria Attard. “But we also need stricter enforcement and better road design.”
In the meantime, the motorcyclist’s family and friends await news of his recovery, hoping for a full and speedy return to the roads he loved.
