Qormi saw the most traffic accidents in the first three months of the year
Qormi’s Road Safety Concern: A Spike in Accidents in 2023
Picture this: the bustling streets of Triq l-Indipendenza, Qormi’s main thoroughfare, at rush hour. Cars, vans, and buses jostle for space, while pedestrians weave through the traffic. It’s a scene that plays out daily in Malta’s towns and cities. But what if you knew that Qormi has seen more traffic accidents in the first three months of this year than any other locality? It’s a statistic that’s hard to ignore, and it’s time we delved into the reasons behind it.
By the Numbers: Qormi’s Accident Hotspots
According to data obtained from the Malta Police Force, Qormi topped the list of localities with the most traffic accidents between January and March 2023. The town recorded a total of 132 accidents, followed by Birkirkara with 118, and Msida with 105. But what’s more concerning is the number of serious accidents. Qormi had 12 accidents resulting in serious injuries, more than any other locality during the same period.
When we zoom in on Qormi’s accident hotspots, a few areas stand out. The junction of Triq l-Indipendenza and Triq il-Kbira saw a significant number of accidents, as did the area around the roundabout leading to the Birkirkara bypass. It’s a stark reminder of the dangers lurking on our roads, especially in areas with high traffic volumes.
What’s Behind the Numbers? Local Insights
To understand why Qormi is seeing more accidents, we need to look beyond the statistics. We spoke to local residents, shop owners, and even a few traffic officers. Their insights paint a picture of a town grappling with a perfect storm of factors.
Resident Maria Gauci, who lives near Triq l-Indipendenza, told us, “The traffic here is always heavy, but it seems to have gotten worse lately. People are in a hurry, and they don’t always follow the rules.” She’s not wrong. Our observations revealed a high number of traffic violations, from speeding to illegal parking.
Shop owner Joe Xuereb, whose business is located near the roundabout, echoed similar sentiments. “The problem is, this roundabout is a bottleneck. It’s always congested, and that leads to mistakes being made.” He’s right. Congestion can lead to impatient driving, which in turn can lead to accidents.
We also spoke to a traffic officer, who wished to remain anonymous. He attributed the spike in accidents to a combination of factors, including increased traffic volumes, driver error, and poor road design in certain areas. He also highlighted the issue of distracted driving, with many drivers using their phones while behind the wheel.
What Can Be Done? A Call to Action
So, what can be done to improve road safety in Qormi? The solutions are complex, but they start with each one of us. We need to drive more responsibly, follow the rules, and be patient. We also need our local councils and the relevant authorities to work together to improve road design and infrastructure. This could mean anything from installing more traffic lights to creating safer pedestrian crossings.
Let’s not forget the role of education. We need to educate our drivers, especially the younger ones, about the dangers of distracted driving and the rules. After all, every accident is preventable.
As for Qormi, the town’s mayor, Mario Fava, has promised to look into the issue. “We’re aware of the problem,” he told us. “We’re working with the police and other stakeholders to find a solution. Our goal is to make Qormi’s roads safer for everyone.” It’s a goal we can all get behind.
