Qormi Tops Malta’s Traffic Accident List
Qormi’s Road Safety Concern: A Closer Look at the Numbers
Picture this: it’s a sunny afternoon in Qormi, Malta’s third largest local council. The bustling streets, lined with traditional balconies and historic buildings, are filled with the usual hum of activity. But what if you knew that these very streets had seen more traffic accidents in the first three months of this year than any other town or city in Malta? This isn’t a question of if, but why, and what can be done about it?
By the Numbers: Qormi’s Accident Hotspots
According to the Malta Police Force, Qormi topped the list with 47 recorded traffic accidents between January and March. This is a significant increase from the same period last year, which saw 36 accidents. But where are these accidents happening, and what’s causing them?
Digging deeper into the data, we find that the most accident-prone areas in Qormi are around Triq San Girgor, near the busy Qormi Market, and along Triq l-Indipendenza, a major thoroughfare leading into the town. These areas are not only densely populated but also serve as key transit routes, connecting Qormi to other towns and cities.
Local Perspectives: Residents Weigh In
We spoke to Qormi residents to get their take on the situation. Maria, a long-time resident who lives near Triq San Girgor, told us, “I’ve noticed an increase in traffic, especially during peak hours. It’s not just the volume, but also the speed at which drivers are going. It’s scary, especially when you have kids playing outside.”
Joseph, a local shop owner along Triq l-Indipendenza, echoed Maria’s concerns. “I’ve seen several accidents happen right in front of my shop. It’s a busy road, and some drivers just don’t pay attention. We need something to be done about it.”
What’s Being Done and What Can Be Done
The Qormi Local Council has been working with the Malta Police Force to address these concerns. They’ve implemented traffic calming measures, such as speed humps and pedestrian crossings, in accident hotspots. However, some residents feel that more could be done.
Dr. Michael Farrugia, Mayor of Qormi, told us, “We’re constantly reviewing and improving our traffic management strategies. We’re also working closely with the police to enforce traffic laws and raise awareness among drivers. But we need the community’s help too. We all have a role to play in ensuring our roads are safe.”
So, what can you do? Slow down, pay attention, and always prioritize safety when you’re behind the wheel. If you see a traffic violation, report it. And if you have ideas on how to make Qormi’s roads safer, share them with your local council.
After all, it’s our town, our streets, and our responsibility to keep them safe.
