The answer lies in a mix of factors unique to this historic town. “Qormi’s layout, with its narrow streets and high pedestrian footfall, can make driving challenging,” explains Dr. Joseph Cuschieri, a local traffic engineer. “Add to that the high volume of traffic, especially during peak hours, and you have a recipe for accidents.”

Qormi Local Council is well aware of the problem and has been proactive in addressing it. “We’ve been working closely with the Malta Police and other stakeholders to improve road safety,” says Councilor for Infrastructure, ing. Joseph Saliba. “We’ve installed speed cameras, improved street lighting, and even repainted road markings to make them more visible.”

Community involvement is also key. The ‘Qormi Safer Streets’ initiative, launched earlier this year, encourages residents to report traffic hazards and suggest safety improvements. “We want everyone to feel they have a stake in making our streets safer,” adds Saliba.
