Qormi’s Road Safety Crisis: A Closer Look

Qormi’s Road Safety Concern: A Closer Look at the Numbers

Picture this: it’s a sunny afternoon in Qormi, Malta’s third largest local council. The bustling streets, lined with traditional balconies and historic buildings, are filled with the usual hum of activity. But lurking behind this charming facade is a worrying trend that’s been making headlines – Qormi topped the list for traffic accidents in the first three months of the year.

By the Numbers: Qormi’s Accident Hotspots

According to the Malta Police, Qormi saw a total of 117 road accidents between January and March. That’s an average of nearly four accidents per day, more than any other local council during the same period. The most accident-prone streets? Triq San Girgor and Triq il-Karmnu, both major thoroughfares that cut through the heart of Qormi.

But why Qormi? The answer lies in a mix of factors unique to this historic town. “Qormi’s layout, with its narrow streets and high pedestrian footfall, can make driving challenging,” explains Dr. Joseph Cuschieri, a local traffic engineer. “Add to that the high volume of traffic, especially during peak hours, and you have a recipe for accidents.”

Local Initiatives: Qormi’s Fight Against Road Accidents

Qormi Local Council is well aware of the problem and has been proactive in addressing it. “We’ve been working closely with the Malta Police and other stakeholders to improve road safety,” says Councilor for Infrastructure, ing. Joseph Saliba. “We’ve installed speed cameras, improved street lighting, and even repainted road markings to make them more visible.”

Community involvement is also key. The ‘Qormi Safer Streets’ initiative, launched earlier this year, encourages residents to report traffic hazards and suggest safety improvements. “We want everyone to feel they have a stake in making our streets safer,” adds Saliba.

What Can Drivers Do? Practical Tips for Safer Driving

While local authorities work on infrastructure improvements, drivers also have a crucial role to play. “Slow down, especially in built-up areas,” advises Dr. Cuschieri. “And always be on the lookout for pedestrians, cyclists, and other vulnerable road users.”

Here are some practical tips for safer driving in Qormi:

    • Plan your route to avoid busy streets during peak hours.
    • Use your indicators and maintain a safe following distance.
    • Never use your phone while driving. Even hands-free calls can distract.
    • Respect speed limits and traffic signs. They’re there for a reason.

Let’s make Qormi’s streets safer, together. After all, it’s our town, and we all have a part to play.
