Qormi’s Road Safety Concern: A Spike in Accidents in 2023
Picture this: the bustling streets of Qormi, Malta’s fifth-largest town, humming with life. Now, imagine those same streets, not with the usual rhythm of daily commutes, but with an unsettling increase in the sound of screeching tires and crunching metal. This is not a hypothetical scenario, but a reality that Qormi residents have been facing in the first three months of 2023.
According to the Malta Police, Qormi has seen the most traffic accidents among all local councils in the first quarter of the year. The numbers are stark: 147 accidents, a significant jump from the 122 recorded in the same period last year. This trend has raised eyebrows and sparked conversations among locals, who are now questioning the safety of their streets.
Understanding the Numbers
Breaking down the statistics, we find that the majority of these accidents occurred on Qormi’s main thoroughfares. Triq l-Indipendenza and Triq San Girgor, two of the town’s busiest streets, top the list with the highest number of incidents. The peak hours for these accidents? Morning and evening rush hours, when the streets are congested with commuters.
But it’s not just the quantity of accidents that’s concerning. The severity is also a cause for worry. Among the 147 accidents, 22 resulted in injuries, with three being serious. This means that, on average, someone was injured in a traffic accident in Qormi every other day in the first three months of the year.
What’s Behind the Numbers?
So, what’s causing this spike in traffic accidents in Qormi? Local experts and residents point to a mix of factors. Poor road infrastructure, lack of signage, and narrow streets are often cited as contributing factors. The increase in traffic, both from residents and commuters, is also a concern. Some residents also blame speeding and reckless driving, with many calling for stricter enforcement.
Councillor for Infrastructure, Mario Fava, acknowledges the problem. “We’re aware of the situation,” he says. “We’re working on improving road infrastructure and signage. We’re also in talks with the police to increase patrols during peak hours.”
What Can Be Done?
While the local council works on improving infrastructure, there are steps that residents can take too. Slowing down, being more aware of other road users, and adhering to traffic rules can all help make Qormi’s streets safer.
Local resident and business owner, Joseph Xuereb, has a simple message for his fellow Qormi residents. “We all need to do our part. It’s not just about us, it’s about our families, our friends, our community. Let’s make Qormi’s streets safe again.”
