The bustling streets around Triq l-Indipendenza are filled with the usual humdrum of life – school kids rushing to class, market vendors setting up shop, and cars weaving in and out of traffic. But what if I told you that these very streets have seen more traffic accidents in the first three months of 2023 than any other town or city in Malta?

By the Numbers: Qormi’s Accident Hotspot

According to data obtained from the Malta Police Force, Qormi has witnessed 57 traffic accidents between January and March this year. This figure outpaces other localities like Birkirkara (48 accidents) and Paola (39 accidents). The numbers are sobering, especially when you consider that Qormi is home to around 16,000 people, significantly fewer than the 22,000 residents of Birkirkara.

Narrow Streets and Heavy Traffic – Qormi’s historic core is characterized by narrow streets that were never designed to accommodate today’s heavy traffic. This often leads to congestion and impatient drivers, creating a recipe for accidents. Take Triq l-Indipendenza, for instance – it’s a major thoroughfare that funnels traffic into the town, but it’s also a bottleneck that can cause tempers to flare.

School Zones and Market Days – Qormi is home to several schools and a bustling market. On school days and market days, traffic can be chaotic, with parents dropping off kids and shoppers vying for parking spots. These situations can lead to hurried maneuvers and, unfortunately, accidents.

Speeding and Parking Woes – Like many towns, Qormi struggles with speeding and parking issues. We urge drivers to be patient and cautious, especially in school zones and market days.”
