Reckless Racing on Maltese Streets: A Dangerous Trend

Reckless Races: The Dangerous Trend Sweeping Maltese Streets

Imagine this: You’re driving down Triq San Gwann, heading towards Sliema, when suddenly, a car speeds past you, weaving in and out of traffic, its occupants cheering and filming the reckless stunt. This isn’t a scene from a Hollywood movie; it’s a reality that’s been unfolding on our very own streets.

Videos Emerge on Social Media

Recently, videos have surfaced on social media platforms, showing groups of young adults driving recklessly through Maltese streets, speeding, performing dangerous maneuvers, and even driving the wrong way down one-way streets. The videos, often filmed on smartphones, are then shared online, with some gaining hundreds of views and likes.

One such video, shot on Triq San Ġwann, shows a car speeding past other vehicles, the occupants laughing and cheering as the driver performs a dangerous overtake. Another, filmed in Msida, shows a car driving the wrong way down Triq Il-Kunċizzjoni, narrowly missing oncoming traffic.

Local Residents and Business Owners Alarmed

News of these reckless driving incidents has spread like wildfire among local communities. Residents and business owners in areas like Sliema, Msida, and Birkirkara have expressed their alarm and frustration at the dangerous behavior.

Maria, a Sliema resident, told Hot Malta, “I’m terrified to drive with my kids in the car. It’s only a matter of time before someone gets seriously hurt, or worse.” Meanwhile, Joe, a Birkirkara shop owner, said, “These reckless drivers are putting lives at risk, including their own. It’s only a matter of time before they cause a serious accident.”

Police Crackdown and Public Awareness

The Malta Police Force has issued a stern warning to drivers engaging in such behavior, reminding them that reckless driving is a criminal offense punishable by law. They have also stepped up patrols in areas where such incidents have been reported.

Hot Malta urges readers to report any incidents of reckless driving to the police on 119 or via the ‘iWatch’ app. Let’s work together to make our streets safer for everyone.

In the words of Transport Minister Ian Borg, “Reckless driving has no place on our roads. We will not tolerate behavior that puts lives at risk. Together, we can make our roads safer.”
