Scaffolding Collapse at Birkirkara Recycling Facility Injures Workers
As the sun rose over the industrial estate in Birkirkara, the usual hum of activity was abruptly shattered by a deafening crash. The scaffolding at the RecycleMalta facility, a staple of the local recycling scene, had given way, sending workers scrambling for safety and leaving a scene of chaos and injury.
Emergency Services Rush to the Scene
Emergency services were swift to respond, with ambulances and fire trucks racing to the scene on Triq il-Kbira, the main thoroughfare of Birkirkara. The injured workers, some with visible cuts and bruises, were tended to by paramedics before being rushed to Mater Dei Hospital for further treatment. The Maltese Red Cross, a familiar sight at such incidents, was also on hand to provide support.
“We received a call at around 7:30 am,” said a spokesperson for the Malta Fire Authority. “Our teams worked quickly to ensure the area was made safe and that the injured were given the best possible care.”
Investigation Launched into Cause of Collapse
The Occupational Health and Safety Authority (OHSA) has launched an investigation into the cause of the scaffolding collapse. Inspectors were seen at the scene, taking statements from workers and examining the remains of the scaffolding.
“We are treating this as a serious incident,” said an OHSA spokesperson. “Our investigation will look into all aspects of the incident, including the condition of the scaffolding, its assembly, and any potential safety oversights.”
RecycleMalta, the company responsible for the facility, has issued a statement expressing their concern for the injured workers and promising full cooperation with the OHSA investigation. They have also confirmed that operations at the facility will remain suspended until further notice.
Community Reacts with Concern and Support
The incident has sparked concern and outrage among the local community. Neighbours and passersby have taken to social media to express their shock and wish the injured workers a speedy recovery.
“This could have been so much worse,” said Joe, a Birkirkara resident who witnessed the aftermath of the collapse. “I hope the authorities get to the bottom of this quickly and that those responsible are held accountable.”
Local politicians have also weighed in, with several calling for a thorough investigation and improved safety standards at such facilities.
“Our workers deserve to go about their jobs in safety,” said a Labour MP. “Incidents like this should not happen, and we must do everything in our power to prevent them.”
