Scaffolding Collapse at Birkirkara Recycling Plant Injures Workers

Early this morning, the quiet streets of Birkirkara were shattered by the sudden collapse of a scaffolding structure at the Recycle Malta facility. The incident left several workers injured, with two being rushed to Mater Dei Hospital in critical condition.

Hot Malta was on the scene within minutes, finding a chaotic scene of twisted metal and scattered debris. Neighbouring businesses, including the popular Il-Ħanut café, were quickly evacuated as a precaution. The strong smell of chemicals filled the air, a stark reminder of the hazardous nature of the recycling process.

What Caused the Collapse?

The exact cause of the scaffolding collapse is still under investigation, but eyewitnesses report that the structure gave way suddenly, with no prior signs of distress. The Malta Resources Authority (MRA) has already begun its probe, with inspectors combing through the wreckage and interviewing workers.

Recycle Malta, in a brief statement, expressed their concern for the injured workers and pledged full cooperation with the MRA’s investigation. They also confirmed that operations at the plant have been temporarily suspended pending further notice.

Impact on Birkirkara and Surrounding Areas

The collapse has caused significant disruption in the area. Traffic along Triq il-Kunsill tal-Ewropa has been diverted, leading to delays and congestion. Residents have been advised to keep windows closed and stay indoors due to potential chemical fumes.

Local councillor, Joe Attard, was quick to respond, “This is a serious incident that could have been much worse. Our priority now is the safety of our residents and the swift resolution of this issue.”

Environmental activists have also raised concerns about the potential ecological impact, with fears that chemicals could have leaked into the nearby Wied il-Kbir valley.

Support Pouring In for Injured Workers

The Maltese community has rallied around the injured workers, with many taking to social media to express their support. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help with their medical expenses, with donations pouring in from across the island.

Father Tomasz Gorny, from the nearby St. Helen’s Church, led a prayer session for the injured workers and their families. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them and their loved ones during this difficult time,” he said.
