Soldier’s Mockery of Army Gate Leads to Dismissal: Court Upholds Decision

Imagine standing at the bustling Republic Street in Valletta, the capital’s main thoroughfare, and witnessing a soldier, in full uniform, mimicking the opening and closing of the historic Army Gate. This was the scene that unfolded last year, captured on video and shared widely on social media, sparking a chain of events that led to the soldier’s dismissal.

Mockery Gone Viral

The soldier, identified as Private Joseph Azzopardi, was caught on camera mimicking the gate’s opening and closing mechanism, a gesture seen as disrespectful to the military and its heritage. The video, shot by a passerby, quickly went viral, sparking outrage and calls for disciplinary action.

Army Gate, a iconic landmark in the heart of Valletta, is more than just a gate. It’s a symbol of Malta’s military history, a testament to the island’s resilience and strength. Its opening and closing, a tradition dating back centuries, is a sign of respect and honour for the military and the country it serves.

Court Upholds Dismissal

Private Azzopardi was subsequently dismissed from the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) following a disciplinary hearing. His dismissal was later upheld by the Industrial Tribunal, which ruled that the AFM had acted fairly and timely in dismissing the soldier.

The tribunal, in its ruling, stated that Azzopardi’s actions were a “breach of discipline and a disrespectful gesture towards the AFM and its traditions.” It also noted that the soldier’s actions had brought the AFM into disrepute, a serious offence that warranted dismissal.

Lawyers for Azzopardi argued that the dismissal was disproportionate, but the tribunal disagreed. It ruled that the AFM had acted within its rights and had taken into account the soldier’s previous disciplinary record and the seriousness of the offence.

AFM: Zero Tolerance for Disrespect

Commenting on the ruling, an AFM spokesperson stated, “The Armed Forces of Malta has a zero-tolerance policy towards disrespectful behaviour. Our traditions and heritage are sacrosanct, and we will not hesitate to take disciplinary action against anyone who undermines them.”

The spokesperson also thanked the public for their support and for bringing the matter to their attention. “We are grateful to the public for their vigilance and for bringing this matter to our notice. It is through such collective efforts that we can maintain the high standards and traditions of the AFM.”

Private Azzopardi has the right to appeal the tribunal’s decision. However, as of now, the dismissal stands, sending a clear message to the AFM and the public at large about the seriousness of disrespect towards military traditions.
