Soldier’s Mocking Dismissal Upheld: Fair and Timely
Soldier’s Dismissal: A Fair and Timely Decision, Court Rules
Imagine standing at the bustling Republic Street in Valletta, the capital’s main thoroughfare, and witnessing a soldier, in full uniform, mocking the very institution he serves. This was the scene that unfolded last year, sparking a chain of events that culminated in a court ruling this week.
Mocking the Army, Mocking Malta
The soldier in question, a 25-year-old from Msida, was caught on camera mimicking the opening and closing of the army gate at the Castille Square, just a stone’s throw away from the Prime Minister’s Office. The video, which quickly went viral, sparked outrage among the public and the military brass alike. The question on everyone’s lips was: how could a soldier, sworn to protect and serve, mock the very symbol of Malta’s defence?
The soldier was subsequently charged with conduct unbecoming of a soldier and bringing the army into disrepute. His case was heard at the Armed Forces Disciplinary Tribunal this week.
Court’s Verdict: Fair and Timely
The court, presided over by a senior military officer, ruled that the soldier’s actions were a clear breach of discipline and brought the army into disrepute. The court noted that the soldier’s actions were not a one-off mistake but a deliberate act caught on camera, which could have been seen by anyone, including foreign dignitaries and tourists visiting the historic square.
The court dismissed the soldier from the army, ruling that the dismissal was “fair and timely”. The court also ordered the soldier to pay a fine of €500 and to cover the costs of the disciplinary hearing.
Army’s Response: Zero Tolerance for Misconduct
Reacting to the court’s decision, the army spokesperson reiterated the army’s zero-tolerance policy towards misconduct. “The army expects the highest standards of behaviour from its personnel, both on and off duty,” the spokesperson said. “The soldier’s actions were a clear breach of these standards, and we are satisfied with the court’s decision.”
The spokesperson also took the opportunity to remind the public that such incidents are rare and do not reflect the behaviour of the majority of soldiers who serve with honour and dedication.
As for the soldier, he has the right to appeal the court’s decision. However, as of now, his dismissal stands, and he is no longer a part of the Malta Army.
This case serves as a stark reminder that the military, like any other institution, has its own rules and expectations. And when those rules are broken, there are consequences. , let’s hope that such incidents remain rare and that our soldiers continue to serve with the honour and dedication that Malta expects and deserves.
