Mellieħa, a town known for its quiet streets and friendly neighbours, woke up to an unusual scene yesterday. The usually tranquil atmosphere was disrupted by the sound of sirens as an elderly resident was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital, allegedly injured by a 17-year-old neighbour.

What Happened?

The incident occurred at around 10 AM on Tuesday, 12th April, at a residential complex in Triq l-Imqades, Mellieħa. According to eyewitnesses, the teenager, who has not been named due to his age, allegedly pushed the 75-year-old woman, causing her to fall and sustain injuries.

The elderly woman was immediately taken to Mater Dei Hospital, where she is currently receiving treatment. Her condition is stable, but she is said to be shaken by the incident.

Teen Charged with Injuring Neighbour

Following the incident, the teenager was arrested and taken to the Mellieħa Police Station. He was subsequently charged with causing actual bodily harm and released on police bail pending further investigations. The court has imposed a restraining order, preventing the teen from approaching the elderly woman or her residence.

This is not the first time that the teenager has found himself on the wrong side of the law. Sources close to the matter reveal that he has had previous brushes with the authorities, although no details have been made public.

Reactions from the Community

The incident has through the close-knit community of Mellieħa. Neighbours are left wondering how such an act could occur in their peaceful town. Many have expressed their support for the elderly woman and her family, with some even setting up a fundraiser to help with her medical expenses.

Local Councillor, Joseph Muscat, expressed his concern, “This is a wake-up call for our community. We need to look out for each other, especially our elderly neighbours. We must ensure that Mellieħa remains a safe and peaceful place for everyone.”

Mellieħa Parish Priest, Fr. Joe Borg, added, “Our hearts go out to the elderly woman and her family. We pray for her swift recovery and urge our community to come together in support during this difficult time.”

As for the teenager, he is due back in court on the 26th of April. The community awaits the outcome of the case, hoping that justice will be served and that such an incident will not be repeated.
