Abela’s Pledge: Can Malta’s Government Deliver?

Abela’s Pledge: “We Know We Can Deliver”

Under the warm glow of a summer’s evening, Malta’s Prime Minister, Robert Abela, stood before a sea of supporters at the Labour Party’s headquarters in Pieta. The air was thick with anticipation as he declared, “We know we can deliver on all our promises.” But what does this pledge mean for Malta’s future, and can Abela’s government truly make good on its commitments?

Promises Made, Promises Kept?

Abela’s speech was a rallying cry, a reminder of the Labour Party’s manifesto pledges. From affordable housing to improved healthcare, from economic growth to environmental sustainability, the promises were numerous and ambitious. But as the saying goes, “actions speak louder than words.” So, how is Malta’s government faring in its quest to deliver?

Take, for instance, the promise to build 10,000 affordable homes by 2027. The government has made a start, with projects like Ta’ Giorni in Birkirkara and Ta’ Qali underway. Yet, with the demand for affordable housing skyrocketing, many wonder if the target is ambitious enough and if the pace of delivery can be maintained.

Or consider the pledge to make Malta a carbon-neutral country by 2050. The government has introduced measures like the Energy and Water Agency and the Malta Clean Energy Platform. However, with Malta’s heavy reliance on imported energy and its status as a major maritime hub, the challenge is formidable.

Navigating the Economic Storm

Abela’s government has faced its fair share of headwinds, not least the global economic storm triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic. Malta’s economy, heavily reliant on tourism and hospitality, was one of the hardest hit in Europe. Yet, the government has been quick to respond, implementing support schemes like Wage Supplement and Business Enhance scheme to keep businesses afloat and jobs secure.

But as the economy begins to recover, the government faces new challenges. Inflation is rising, and the cost of living is a growing concern for many Maltese. Abela has pledged to tackle these issues, but with the global economic outlook uncertain, it’s a tall order.

Listening to the People

Abela’s speech was not just a boastful declaration but a call to action. He urged his supporters to “keep pushing, keep fighting, and keep working together.” It was a reminder that governance in Malta is not a one-way street. The government’s promises are not just its own, but those of the people who elected it.

And so, the question remains: can Abela’s government deliver on its promises? . But one thing is certain – the people of Malta will be watching, waiting, and hoping for a future where every promise made is a promise kept.

As Abela himself put it, “We know we can deliver. But we need you to hold us accountable, to keep us working, and to keep us fighting for a better Malta.”
