Archbishop Scicluna Recovers in Malta After Successful Surgery Abroad

Malta’s Archbishop Charles Scicluna has begun his convalescence on the island after successfully undergoing surgery abroad, the Archdiocese of Malta announced today. The news comes as a relief to the local Catholic community, who have been closely following the Archbishop’s health journey.

Surgery and Recovery

The Archbishop, who has been at the helm of the Maltese Catholic Church since 2019, underwent a scheduled surgery earlier this month. Although the details of the procedure have not been disclosed, the Archdiocese has assured the public that it was a success. Archbishop Scicluna is now recuperating in Malta, with his recovery process closely monitored by medical professionals.

In a statement released today, the Archdiocese expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and prayers from the Maltese community. “We are deeply touched by the concern shown by the faithful and the many messages of support received,” the statement read. “We ask for continued prayers for the Archbishop’s swift recovery.”

Local Tributes and Well-wishes

Malta’s political leaders and prominent figures have also extended their well-wishes to Archbishop Scicluna. Prime Minister Robert Abela tweeted, “Wishing Archbishop Charles Scicluna a speedy recovery. Our thoughts and prayers are with him during this time.” Opposition leader Bernard Grech also wished the Archbishop a swift return to good health.

Locals have been leaving messages of support on the Archdiocese’s Facebook page, with many expressing their relief at the successful surgery. “Thank God for the successful operation,” wrote one commenter. “We pray for a speedy recovery, Your Grace,” added another.

Archbishop Scicluna’s Ministry

Archbishop Scicluna, a native of Birkirkara, was ordained a priest in 1985 and served as Bishop of Gozo from 2006 to 2019 before being appointed Archbishop of Malta. He is known for his strong pastoral leadership and his commitment to social justice issues, including migration and poverty. His ministry has been a source of inspiration and guidance for many Maltese Catholics.

As the Archbishop continues his recovery, the Archdiocese has assured the public that the day-to-day operations of the Church will continue as normal. The Archdiocese’s Vicar General, Mons. Joseph Galea-Curmi, will be acting as Apostolic Administrator during the Archbishop’s absence.

In a recent interview, Archbishop Scicluna expressed his gratitude for the prayers and support of the Maltese people. “I am deeply moved by the concern shown by the faithful,” he said. “I ask for their continued prayers and I promise them that I will do everything in my power to continue serving the Church and the people of Malta with renewed energy and dedication once I have recovered.”
