Drugs Seized in Valletta: Man Arrested in St. John’s Street

In the heart of Malta’s capital, a bustling Valletta street was the scene of a dramatic arrest yesterday. St. John’s Street, a narrow thoroughfare teeming with tourists and locals alike, was temporarily closed off as police swooped in to apprehend a man suspected of drug possession and trafficking.

Operation Leads to Significant Drug Seizure

Sources close to the investigation have revealed that the operation, codenamed ‘Operation Sunrise’, led to the seizure of a substantial amount of drugs, including cocaine and cannabis. The man, a 35-year-old Malta resident, was arrested following a tip-off from the public. Police executed a search warrant at his residence in Msida, where they discovered the illicit substances.

Superintendent Mario Vella, leading the operation, praised the public’s involvement, “We rely heavily on information from the community. This seizure is a testament to the success of our collaborative approach to law enforcement.”

Local Reaction and the Fight Against Drugs

News of the arrest has sparked mixed reactions among Valletta residents. While some commended the police for their swift action, others expressed concern about the growing drug problem in Malta. “We see tourists coming here, and we don’t want them to associate Valletta with drugs,” said Joseph, a local shop owner.

Malta’s Minister for Home Affairs, Byron Camilleri, echoed these sentiments, “Our islands are a safe haven, and we will continue to fight against any threat to that. We’re committed to making Malta a drug-free zone.”

The man is currently in police custody, awaiting charges. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 26 years imprisonment under Malta’s Drug Abuse Act.
