Gozo Motorcycle Accident: Motorcyclist Seriously Injured

Motorcyclist Injured in Gozo Collision: What We Know So Far

As the sun set over the picturesque Xewkija Hill in Gozo last evening, a scene of chaos unfolded on Triq l-Imqaddes, a usually quiet street leading up to the famous Rotunda. A motorcyclist lay injured on the road, the victim of a collision that has left the close-knit community shaken.

Accident Details

The accident occurred around 7:30 PM when a 28-year-old man, identified only as A.B., lost control of his motorcycle and collided with a car driven by a 52-year-old woman. The motorcyclist, a resident of Xagħra, was thrown from his bike and sustained serious injuries, including a broken leg and suspected internal injuries.

The driver of the car, a local resident from Għarb, was unharmed. She immediately called the emergency services, and an ambulance rushed the injured man to Gozo General Hospital. His condition is described as stable but serious.

Witness Accounts

Eyewitnesses reported seeing the motorcyclist speeding before the crash. “He was going too fast around the bend,” said one witness, who wished to remain anonymous. “I’ve seen him riding like that before. It’s only a matter of time before something like this happens.”

Another resident, who lives near the scene of the accident, expressed concern about the increasing number of speed-related incidents in the area. “We’ve been asking for speed bumps or traffic calming measures for years. Maybe this will finally push the authorities to do something.”

Police Investigation

The Gozo Police have launched an investigation into the incident. They are appealing for any witnesses to come forward with information. “We urge anyone who saw the incident or has any information that could help our investigation to contact us immediately,” said a police spokesperson.

In the meantime, the community has rallied around the injured motorcyclist. A.G., a friend of the victim, told Hot Malta, “We’re all shocked by what happened. We’re hoping he makes a full recovery. We’re thinking of him and his family at this difficult time.”

The road where the accident occurred was closed for several hours while forensic police examined the scene. It has since reopened, but traffic remains heavy due to the ongoing investigation.

This is the third serious road accident in Gozo this month, raising concerns about road safety on the sister island. The Gozo Regional Committee has called for an urgent meeting with the Ministry for Transport and Infrastructure to discuss possible solutions.

Road Safety in Gozo

Road safety has been a contentious issue in Gozo for years. The island’s narrow, winding roads and increasing traffic have led to a rise in accidents. According to statistics from the Malta Police Force, there were 115 road accidents in Gozo in 2020, resulting in 185 casualties.

Local councils have been calling for more resources to be allocated to road safety measures, including better signage, improved lighting, and increased traffic enforcement. “We need to do more to prevent these accidents from happening,” said a councilor from Xagħra, who wished to remain anonymous.

In the wake of this latest accident, the Gozo Regional Committee has called on drivers to exercise caution on the roads. “We all have a responsibility to ensure our roads are safe,” said a spokesperson. “Please, slow down and drive carefully, especially on our narrow, winding roads.”

As the investigation into the Gozo collision continues, the community waits with bated breath for updates on the injured motorcyclist’s condition. In the meantime, residents are urging drivers to take extra care on the roads, hoping to prevent another tragedy.
