Gozo Motorcycle Crash: Biker Seriously Injured
Motorcyclist Injured in Gozo Collision: What We Know So Far
Emergency services rushed to the scene of a collision involving a motorcyclist and a car on Gozo’s Victoria Road yesterday afternoon, leaving the biker with serious injuries. The incident, which occurred near the St. George’s Basilica, has once again highlighted the need for road safety on the sister island.
What Happened?
According to eyewitnesses, the collision took place around 3 pm when a 35-year-old man from Xewkija was traveling towards Victoria on his motorcycle. A car, driven by a 65-year-old man from Żebbuġ, turned left onto the main road from a side street, leading to the crash.
The motorcyclist was thrown from his bike and sustained serious injuries, including a broken leg and suspected internal injuries. He was immediately taken to Gozo General Hospital, where he remains in stable condition. The driver of the car was uninjured but was taken to the hospital for a check-up as a precaution.
Road Safety Concerns
This incident has reignited concerns about road safety on Gozo, particularly in the busy Victoria area. With an increasing number of vehicles on the road, especially during peak tourist season, local residents and authorities have been calling for improved traffic management and road safety awareness.
Gozo Minister Justyne Caruana expressed her concern about the incident, stating, “We need to remind everyone to drive safely and responsibly. We must look out for each other, especially vulnerable road users like motorcyclists.”
Last year, the Gozo Regional Committee launched a road safety campaign, ‘Għall-Qalb ta’ Għawdex’ (For the Heart of Gozo), focusing on reducing accidents and promoting safe driving habits. However, incidents like yesterday’s collision underscore the need for continued vigilance.
Investigation and Support
The police are currently investigating the incident and appealing for any witnesses to come forward. In a statement, the police reminded drivers to always check their mirrors and indicate when turning, while motorcyclists should wear high-visibility clothing and use their headlights even during the day.
Meanwhile, the motorcyclist’s family has requested privacy as they support him through his recovery. A fundraiser has been set up to help with his medical expenses, with many locals already showing their support.
As the investigation continues and the motorcyclist recovers, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety. Let’s all do our part to keep our roads safe, especially in the bustling streets of Victoria.
