Gozo Motorcycle Crash: Local Man Injured
Motorcyclist Injured in Gozo Collision: What We Know So Far
As the sun set over the rugged landscapes of Gozo last evening, a collision between a motorcycle and a car left a local motorcyclist injured. The incident, which occurred on the scenic Triq l-Imqabba road, has once again highlighted the importance of road safety on our sister island.
What Happened?
The collision, involving a 35-year-old man from Xewkija on a motorcycle and a 45-year-old man from Victoria in a car, took place around 7:30 PM. According to preliminary reports, the motorcyclist was traveling towards Xagħra when the collision occurred. He was taken to Gozo General Hospital with suspected leg injuries.
The road was closed for several hours while police investigations were carried out, causing some traffic congestion in the area. The police have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.
Road Safety in Gozo
Gozo, known for its winding roads and picturesque views, can present unique challenges to motorists and motorcyclists alike. While the island’s roads are generally quieter than those in Malta, the lower traffic volume can sometimes lead to complacency.
According to the Malta Police, road accidents in Gozo have been on the decline in recent years, but there’s still much work to be done. In 2020, there were 18 road accidents in Gozo, down from 26 in 2019. However, even one accident is one too many, especially when it results in injury.
Local councils and the police have been working together to improve road safety, with initiatives such as the ‘Gozo Safe’ campaign. This campaign aims to educate road users about the dangers of speeding, distracted driving, and not wearing seatbelts or helmets.
What’s Next?
The police investigation into the collision is ongoing. We will continue to update our readers as more information becomes available. In the meantime, we urge all road users to exercise caution, especially on the winding roads of Gozo.
As one local resident put it, “Gozo’s roads can be challenging, but they’re part of what makes our island so special. Let’s all do our part to keep them safe.”
